Persistent Difficulty Swallowing

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

I am brand new to the Lapband Talk community, but I am looking for some feedback/support.

I was banded March 6, 2013. I've had 2 fills since then totally 3ccs currently in the band. My surgery and recovery was very difficult, but here we are 3 months and a bit later!

Issue is-right from when I began back on soft food I have difficulty swallowing. A lot of difficulty! It's essentially not gotten any better over the past 3 months. It is very hard with solid/dry food or anything with a crust/peel. If I don't drink a lot of Water with eating, the food stocks in my throat and makes me either want to gag or feel like I'm choking or going to vomit. I have tried eating slower and eating smaller bites and chewing really well. Nothing changes it.

My surgeon did an endoscopy in the middle of May and said everything physically looked fine. But still, such difficulties with swallowing! He says I am one of only three patients he's had with swallowing problems. He says it is not the band, but I never had any problems at all before the surgery.

So, here I am. Super frustrated and tired of dealing with pain/discomfort every time I eat.

Any suggestions/advice/feedback?

Thank you!!

-Sam

any pain, discomfort you need to go back to your doctor and do not leave until they have made you feel better or advised you what is wrong.

Endoscopy will tell the surgeon if something is physically causing blockage or if there is something wrong with the lining of the stomach/esophagus what you might want to discuss with your surgeon is having an esophageal manomentry done, it measures the rhythmic muscle contractions that occur when you swallow. Big difference if your having troubles swallowing.

Hope this helps!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
