Struggling with solid food

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem. This is the third time this has happened to me (I was banded Dec 2010). I'm going along really well, able to eat anything I want, and then one day I can't hardly get anything down and it it lasts for days and days!

Right now I'm trying to make it on Protein shakes and mushy foods . The other two times the doc put me one prednisone and liquids and now I have no Fluid in my band, and it still happens! I get food stuck still, too. I have caught myself eating too fast, so I have slowed way down again. I have to admit that have been overeating, with no fills I get hungry a lot.

I'm afraid I have stretched my pouch or the band has slipped! I don't have a problem with re-flux though. Any thoughts on this?

I would definitely see the surgeon if you can't get any food down. Definitely something wrong. Hopefully something they can easily fix.

Saw my doc today....my band is tilted a little bit. She told me not to worry about it, put me on prednisone again. I sure wish I could figure out why this happens. The doc said it wasn't necessarily my fault. I'm gonna to try harder not to overeat again, and see if this doesn't happen again. Carry on.

Hope that it all settles down for you and that your band moves back to the right place. I have periods when my band is waaay tighter for no apparent reason, but it does tend to line up with my monthly cycle so I always wondered if it was hormone related. Stress can be a killer too, when I have got a hectic schedule at work it tends to play up more. I cant really offer much help but I do hope that it sorts itself out.

Mine did the same thing, basically. For no apparent reason I suddenly couldn't get anything down. It would take about 4 hours to drink an Protein shake. The only relief I would get when the doc would give me prednisone. It happened five times since Nov (about every two months) doc said that was way too much. He said I was having esophageal spasms. In some people the band will cause them.. Nothing was wrong with my band, no slip or erosion. I had my band removed Aug 26. I feel so much better. Eating normally again. Best of luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
