pain when burping and heartburn

Recommended Posts

had my surgery this past Tuesday (06/11/2013). From the moment I woke in the recovery room I've had horrible heartburn and chest pain. The chest pain has eased, but the heartburn is unbearable, it keeps me awake at night and I cant lay down without a flood of acid in my esophagus. I also have extreme pain in my throat and chest when burping. Does the heartburn get any better? will the pain go away when burping?

Not sure if there is any Fluid in the band. I have an appointment Monday, and I have lots of questions for him.

Good, I'm glad. In the meantime, maybe try a liquid antacid to see if it helps with the heart burn. You may even try sleeping on an incline, like on a recliner, to lessen it.

Hang in there :)

I agree, try gas-x too. Maybe walk will relieve it. Gas is the most common thing that we get, never heard of heartburn. Tell doc when you go. Best wishes.

Let us know how the doc appointment goes. I just had my band placed on Thursday the 13th, I too have bad gas pains, honestly not able to burp, I wish that I could, I have been using the Gas x strips and getting up as much as possible. I have found that sleeping with a body pillow hugging my belly and laying on one side or the other gives relief and allows me to sleep at night. Good luck:)

I heating pad also helps. It doesn't get rid of the gas, but it's soothing. In my own experience....it just takes time, and the gas leaves when it's ready. For me, it was about 2 1/2 weeks. 2 1/2 miserable weeks

I have taken Prevacid for heartburn for years (even back when it wasn't OTC. ). I haven't taken it since my surgery on Wednesday but started taking it again tonight.

Prior to surgery I was on 10 daily prescription pills a day and was trying to reduce the number because I HATE med time. Guess I shouldn't have tried to cut that one.

just a quick update. Went to the doctor on monday, explained the heartburn and painful burps. He recommended removing the Fluid. that night I was heartburn free!!! and the pain when burping was gone by tuesday!! I was worried that removing the fluid would cause me to want to eat, but I still have very little interest in eating.

Good for you! thanks for the update. Some surgeons put Fluid during the operation, some don't. i am not sure that i could have tolerated it either!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
