When Will I Ever Learn?

Recommended Posts

6 weeks post op and I still forget. I sit down to eat and I still haven't picked up the habit of remembering that I have the band...so I take a BIG bite...or I don't chew. Or I walk by my daughter's bag of jelly belly's and grab a handful....its neverending...

I WANT to make changes...but so much is just an automatic response. I actually spit out those jelly belly's by the way...1/2 chewed because it took me 15 seconds to remember what my goals are and that a mouthful of jelly belly's just don't fit in with them...

UGH. They need to invent a lap band for the brain hunger response.

My surgery was May 6th, and I totally understand!! I have heard that once they hit the "sweet spot" with your fills, the "voices" stop.

I just had my first fill yesterday, and I have to say that has helped me the last 24 hours  since I am on liquids, it has made me uber aware!

Until, I get comfortable again..

I'm with you EXACTLY! But, good for you for spitting out those jelly beans!!!

It does get better, I promise. I passed up Pasta and cannolis at an Italian Restaurant tonight and it didn't even bother me. Six months ago I would have eaten all that and a basket of bread. It takes time my friend. You're doing great! :)

When I was preparing myself for the 6 months of doctors visits before my surgery (Which is scheduled for July 22nd SO EXCITED) they kept telling me to practice the small bites and lots and lots of chewing.. I'd do it for a few bites and then my habits would take over and I'd completely forget! I'm glad to hear that it is a learning process because it is one of my fears.. that I will take to big of a bite or something like that! Lessons I will have to learn I suppose! I'm glad that everything else is going great! Also along with everyone else!! GOOD JOB for spitting out the jellies. :) Hope te rest of the journey is wonderful for you!!!!! :D

8 mths post op, I have no problem on what I eat, but still struggle with the speed and size of what I put in my mouth. Sometimes I swallow something and right away think uh oh, I didn't chew that very well. The band is quick to remind me.

I does take awhile for the brain to catch up to the band.

Yeah, it's called a lobotomy!! When they figure out how to do one on the appetite center of the brain, I'll be the first in line :P

I had my first fill last week and that is the biggest struggle for me.... Slow eating, chew a lot, and smaller bites. I got stuck after inhaling my lunch at work cause I was really busy caring for a critical patient but was so hungry.... It was miserable and thought I was gonna throw up. Now I am trying to be more conscience but I still struggle.

Glad to hear it is a learning process, cause I'm only post op 2.5 months.

I'm 9 mo post op and got stuck just last night cause I wasn't paying close enough attention when I ate some snack mix :/

It's a constant struggle with your brain but eventually it does become more automatic. I'm proud of you for spitting them out. I wouldn't have :P

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
