ArcusX 216 Posted December 5, 2013 I thought you guys might appreciate this link. Npr's reccos for 2013 http://bit.ly/18Cl3k1?cc=c95596b62113293f3ae637af7df39458 I've seen "Circles" on two lists now, but when I look it up on Amazon, it's not well rated. gamergirl 4,610 Posted December 5, 2013 Don't get me wrong. I like Lee Child; I've read Killing Floor, 61 hours and The Affair, but I have two basic problems: 1) I don't really connect with Jack Reacher; he seems flat to me somehow, and 2) (and this is my biggest problem) All three stories were basically the same: Reacher drifts in, assists the small-town local sheriff, who just happens to be an attractive single woman, twist, Reacher & said sheriff are attracted to each other, turn, kiss, solve the case, then Reacher and Sheriff separate, never to see each other again. As soon as the sheriff enters the story, half the synopsis becomes predictable. The thing that keeps me hooked is trying to figure out exactly how reacher is going to get out if these crazy situations. I actually relate to reacher (as a functional character) rather well. In real life I'd probably think he was a cold fish

Good to see a bunch of cross over on this list with the NPR 2013 list you also sent out. Glad inferno was recognized as a top mystery. Dreamingofhealth 223 Posted December 9, 2013 This is a great thread!! I am currently reading 'the Weight-Loss Prescription' by Ali Zentner. The reason why I'm reading it is because it doesn't tell you how to lose weight. It sheds some light on WHY you eat the way you do. It shows the different groups of 'eaters' from the emotional to the all or nothing dieter. And it helps you recognize the habits and emotions that go along with it so you can begin to change. I'm hoping it will help with my surgery so I can be a long term success. I want to learn as much as I can as to why I ended up almost 300 pounds so I don't EVER get here again! gamergirl 4,610 Posted December 14, 2013 I'm reading The Beautiful Mystery by Louis Penny.i love Louise Penny! I'm reading Hild set in medieval times. The insistence on using olde englische is somewhat wearisome, but interesting nonetheless.
TheOldMeAgain 128 Posted December 14, 2013 I have about a few hundred iBooks I'm working through. Right now I'm reading Sidney Sheldon If Tomorrow Comes. I read all his books and no one compares to him when it comes to suspense. Catherine Coulter and Sandra Brown come close. Old school Nora Roberts did too. Next I'm going to try to finish J. R. Ward Lover Avenged. These books are starting to lose focus, not about romance, the Blackdagger Brotherhood but plot device props to continue the series past it due date. I LOVE Vampire Books. Not the Twilight fluff kind but the deep, soul searching historical Ann Rice type. I also like Christine Feehan vampire books. They remind me of Bertrice Small historical romances in how steamy the love scenes can be. Anyways, still no vampire books that I love as much as Ann Rice books so if anyone knows any authors please let me know.

gamergirl 4,610 Posted December 22, 2013 Having just finished Alan Bradley's The sweetness at the bottom of the pie, I can highly recommend it as a good,, light mystery. The protagonist is 11-year old Flavia de Luce, a budding chemist who finds a dead body and sets about solving the mystery. It's part of a series.

SIJoe 111 Posted January 4, 2014 About the Goldfinch, I'm about three quarters finished. It has a traumatic beginning, some depressing situations, but not a depressing book so far. Some good insights into personalities.
