June 6th 2013 made one year since i was banded. I initially started at 451 lost 50 pounds before the surgery and lost another 30 pounds a few months after being banded. I had some complications not with the band itself but with the port a few weeks after surgery. I ended up with MRSA in the port area and i went on antibiotics and the surgery scar opened up then i had to stuff the hole with iodiform for months and the infection never quite went away. They decided to leave the band but removed the port after determining finally that it was the source of the infection. Then a few more months of stuffing the hole with iodiform to soak up any residual infection until the hole closed and healed. I finally had a new port put back in just a few days ago and my scars are still in the process of healing. Now that ive given a bit of my backstory heres my question. How do i get back on track when i seem to have lost my way and cant get things right. Its like ive forgotten what im supposed to do and not supposed to do. I got aggravated dealing with the infection and got off track. I started getting pretty down hearted. Eating things i shouldnt eat, drinking when i eat because it seems to just sit there in my throat if i dont, drinking soda and now im able to eat way more than i should but still not as much as i used to. Is it too late for me to get things moving in the right direction? Any advice on similar situations or applicable info and how you overcame it would be welcome. Ty.

Wow- sorry you went through all that. MRSA is very serious. I don't think it's every too late to work your band. Go back to the basics- protien first, then non-starchy veggie, then a small amount of starch if your still hungry. Workout when you get the goahead from your doc. You can do this!

Just remember why you went thru it again. While I cannot relate to your health struggles I can relate to your eating habits. I got banded for my health which will allow me to be healthier, for my family, and be here longer with them. This is something that can't be instantly fixed. Start from the beginning. Baby steps. Start working on adjusting to it again and working on new healthier habits. I still struggle with it. From what you mentioned you lost 80 pounds. How did you do that? Just focus on what you did and focus on where you want to be. Good luck and we're all rooting for you.

Check in with your doctor and resume getting fills so that your band is adjusted properly. Speak with the nutritionist to re-inform yourself with your doctors wishes. Good luck.

Never too late! Very good sticking through all this. Do you have the diet your dietitian gave you? I would follow what they have and you should be good.

Ty all for the help and words of encouragement. I have a big obstacle to overcome though with drinking while im eating. food just seems to sit in my throat unless i drink something to wash it down. I dont know if its a fill issue or a trick i need to learn but any advice on that would be helpful also. I will say it might possibly be the size of the bite i take but i dont know how much that plays into it.

by admitting what is wrong and acknowledging a change is needed to be successful, is key...now that you did it, as eye candy said its never ever too late......so you stepped backward some, turn around and get back on the right path..go see your dr, see a nutritionist and start over...but you must start...not just write about it.......the sooner you do, the sooner you can get there...i believe in you now YOU believe in you

How about drinking while eating? If i dont it feel like food is just sitting in my throat. Is it a fill problem, a too big of a bite problem or what? Im not sure what its supposed to feel like if everything is moving correctly.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
