I'm really nervous I'm making the right choice... My whole life I have struggled with my weight. I really want another baby but read that the port could detach from the stomach and cause a lot of pain and possible surgery, while pregnant. Any thought ??? Or has anyone experienced this????

Talk to your surgeon about your plans for more children. It may be best to wait until you are done with that to have surgery. Decide which is more important, your health or another baby.

i have a friend who was banded in 2007. She had a baby this year and she did well. She did not gain any weight and she delivered just fine.

Its very unlikely for your port to detach during pregnancy. I was banded Feb 2010 and got pregnant in Nov 2010 and other then stretching of my muscles and abdomen I didn't have any trouble. It does become uncomfortable and hurts a bit when you are further along in your pregnancy, but right now I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and the only issue I have is it looks like my turkey timer is sticking out LOL. Have you had the surgery yet or is July 23rd when you're going in? I think you really need to weigh your options as to whether you want to get pregnant now or lose weight. It really wont do you much good if you have it then get pregnant a very short while later. I had waited until I hit my 50%+ goal and my health issues stabilized (blood pressure, etc..) then I asked my surgeon for "permission" per say. Your best bet is to talk everything through with your doctor, they will help you feel at ease about everything. Good luck!

I agree with Heather, the band will still be 'stitched' to your abdominal wall, but it will move as your body changes. I have birth 8 weeks ago. From month 7 on , the port was really pressing on my skin and by month nine it had been turned in its side, but was still attached. I knew it was only temporary and it was only a little uncomfortable ( couldn't sleep on left side, maybe a waistband touched it when bending over) , but I would not say it was painful.

Now, 8 weeks later, the port is loose and the full nurse had to hold it still to make a fill ( small fill as I'm breastfeeding), but it works. The hope is that as my body resets to a new normal the port will find a new resting place.

Hope this helps.

i have a low profile port with my realize band. during the last few weeks of my pregnancy, i could definitely feel it when i touched the side of my belly, but the pregnancy wasn't complicated by the port or by having the banding. he wasn't low weight either. c-sec at 37 weeks and still 8 pounds 6 ounces. he'll be two weeks tomorrow.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
