Finally - I"ve Got A Date (for Surgery)!!!!

Recommended Posts

Well, I began this process back in January with the first Seminar.... and I finally got my surgery date today!!!! Yipppeee! Never thought I would be so excited to have major surgery! My date is Friday, May 26th! :biggrin1: :biggrin1:

I have to do a two week liquid diet beginning on May 12th (Glucerna based).:) I figure if I can survive that, I can handle the rest....

Unfortunately I will be forking over $18,000 for the surgery as I have been denied by my insurance company for the third time (exclusion). Insurance companies are evil! (well, most of them)....:angry

In the mean time, I'm hitting my favorite restaurants! Look out Olive Garden!! :clap2: :clap2: :clap2:

Kim, that is wonderful news. Make sure you come here daily for support and advice, especially once you start on your liquid diet. The gang here is wonderful and can get you through everything.

Thanks everyone! Welcome Kelly & Teresa! Now, if I can just survive that two week pre-op liquid diet. Any tips? It includes Glucerna shakes, popsicles, chicken broth, etc. Teresa, you may want to post to the May Band Crew Thread as well.. that's where all of us May people are posting! Here is the thread..

Kim,

The first couple of days on the pre-op is the most difficult. Once you get past them, you really find you are not that hungry anymore. My family was also supportive by fixing dinner for themselves and not eating in front of me. The main thing that stayed in my mind was why I was doing it and what my reward would be. Also, another good motivator for staying on the pre-op is when you step on the scales and see how quickly the pounds come off. I lost almost 15 pounds in two weeks.

Good luck, you can do it.

Thanks Susan! I tried the Glucerna shake this morning, it was pretty good, and it kept me pretty satisfied for a couple of hours.... I think I can have up to six of those a day along with the other "liquids". Wow 15 lbs! That's awesome! I think I can do it, I'm definitely motivated! I gave up carbonated drinks in January and haven't had one since, so I figure if I can give that up, I can do this.. Thanks for the encouragement!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
