A brand called Six Star or Six Starr tastes pretty much like a milkshake if you mix it with milk. I use fat free Carb Countdown milk from Hood.

I'm on the pre-op high Protein diet too ( having surgery on the 12th of May) and have been loving the shakes! Slim Fast Opitma, Atkins Advantage, Boost, and Boost Breeze, Carnation Instant Breakfast - sugar free) I will drink them chilled, or as a smoothy. Most of them all come with a vanilla flavor so I'll just add a flavor packet to them. I hate the strawberry Boost though - ICK! Then I've been adding a scoop of Beneprotein to everything to get the grams in during the day. I feel great and haven't been hungry or craving foods at all! I think I've lose 10 pds too, according to my scale! ;)

I find that the Body Fortress brand (found at Wal-mart & Sam's Club), when mixed with skim milk and refrigerated for at least 1-2 hours, has a thick milkshake-like consistency.

Good luck to you!

I had my surgery 1 week ago. I am on all liquids, living on Soup & Protein Shakes. Check out UNJURY.com. It is the brand my surgeon recommended and it is good. There are recipes on their site as well. They have an unflavored that works well with most hot or cold foods. Just be sure to mix well and then heat up if adding to soup. Also to make my shakes thicker, and colder, I add sugar free Ice cream, just a scoop, it really works.

Body Fortress Vanilla Protein Powder (2 scoops) mixed in 1 1/2 cup of fat free milk (Braum's has the best - not blue!), with 3 tablespoons of sugar free, fat free, chocolate pudding, and 1 tablespoon of reduced fat Peanut Butter. MMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmm. Tastes like drinking a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and gives you 40g of Protein. It's a little too high in fat, calories, and carbs, so I alternated days with this drink and an Isopure carb free protein drink.

I now get all of my protein from the foods I eat so I don't get to have this drink anymore. *Pout*

Good luck!

I really like the body fortress from Walmart too. I always doctor my shakes up though. I add a little chocolate Syrup or strawberry syrup if I'm just having a quick shake. If I'm making a smoothie I've been known to do the following:

vanilla Protein

8oz OJ

variations-

1/2 cup canned pineapple

splash of lite coconut milk

1/2 banana

5-8 frozen strawberries

1/2 banana

1/2 cup frozen berry mix

1/2 banana

teaspoon of instant coffee

splash of chocolate syrup

chocolate protein

8oz low fat milk

splash of chocolate syrup

variations-

add Peanut Butter and/or 1/2 banana

teaspoon of instant coffee

mint extract

I buy a huge bag of strawberries and berries at Sams. I use canned pineapple with no added sugar. Doing it this way makes your shakes a treat.

I like SF CIB with a scoop of unjury. I make it in all different flavors, even add fruit or Peanut Butter. I eat it more like a milkshake or smoothie and enjoy every drop.

Basic Recipe:

1 cup ice

1/2-2/3 cup skim milk (depending on how thick you like it)

1pkt of SF Carnation instant breakfast

1 scoop of Unjury (sometimes flavored or unflavored)

Variations:

Choc CIB

1 Tbsp peanutbutter (makes it taste like a Reece's cup)

choc CIB

1/2 banana

French vanilla CIB

choc flavored Unjury (reminds me of a marshmello sundae)

French vanilla CIB

1/2 banana

about 2 tbsp of canned pineapple or 1 tbsp of Peanut Butter (The peanut butter one is really yummy)

strawberry or French Vanilla CIB

4 or 5 frozen strawberries

about 2 tbsp of canned pineapple or you could do the 1/2 banana here

You're only limited by your imagination. I always keep a bag of frozen strawberries in my freezer and banana's are a staple in my house.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
