Does older age matter for lap band surgury?

Recommended Posts

Hello I am a new member and I am 58 years old. Is there a higher risk of complications with older patients?

The complication risk is based more on your overall health than it is of your age. Someone who is 60 can be in far better overall health than someone 30, hence the 60 year old would have a lessened risk.

I would talk to your doctor and wherever possible, remove any risks within your power, like smoking.

Best wishes.

You're not too old. I was almost 62 when I had the band. My health has done a total turn around for the better. Wish I knew about the band many years ago. Go to support groups and you will see people over 60 there. I feel I will live longer now.

You are young.... I turned 66 in Dec. and had my band surgery on Jan 15... My Dr. says he would rather have older patients because "they get it" .. they have a better success rate because of some maturity and the desire to change their health... I have not felt this good in many years.. I have tons of energy.. am working out daily, riding my horse again and enjoying shopping with my granddaughters... you won't be sorry.. my health has also improved greatly..off of diabetic meds. cholesterol getting better and blood pressure improved... plus I get to shop for new clothes..

Let's see I was 64 when I was banded and I thought with all my health issues at the time that I wouldn't be a candidate for surgery. Well, I was wrong and my PCP felt it was medically necessary and I've never felt better. I'm off diabetic meds , my blood pressure is down and I'm able to walk more than I used to. I'm disabled but losing the weight has helped me tremendously.

Hi,

I Had My Lapband Surgery In 2011 AT age 56. I've Lost 130 Lbs. My Longterm.Chronic.Asthma Is Gone. HBPressure Is Gone. My Allergies Are Gone.

I Can Do Many More Active Things. I Take Yoga. I CanKeep Up Better With My Kids (Older Mom).

Only Thong Is Akin Doeant Snap Back As Well As When Younger, But Not Too Bad. When I Am All Done 30 More Pounds, I Will Have A Tummy Tuck And Breast Lift. It Is So Much Better After Banding. Now, I Have A Chance. I Have A Life. Like So Many Others Wish I Had Courage To Do It Years Before.

Thanks.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
