Help! Eating Out

Recommended Posts

Does any one have any good advice about eating out? I do well as long as I am at home and can stick to my routine. Eating out socially is a big problem for me. I went out to an upscale mandarin restaurant and just didnt do well with my food choices. It's not the portions really, it's more the options. Really didnt have anything to go for low calorie. I mean. Egg rolls, chicken fried rice, beef skewers, shrimp toast, general tsao chicken, beef with pea pods, crystal noodles with shrimp and chicken! I'm like really? I know the simple answer is to have self control and say No! It's just not that easy at times. I logged everything I ate in MyFitness pal and I still didnt do too bad for the day with the very small portions I ate. I just still don't feel right about it :-(

It REALLY is about Portion Control wich is hard , however and this is just MY expeience is that I do a lot of Protein first and then veggies but I do stay away from the rice cause for one it swells inMy band and will make me slime so I don't do it I also try to stay away from some carbs not all just some is harder for me so I don't do them of course I have 10 1/2 ccs in a 14 cc band ,so do what you think is best for you and I don't use fitness pal as I stand on my feet all day for 8 hours.

I simply make good food decisions, and listen to my band as I would no matter where I am eating.....eating venues may change, but the band does not....

I always wind up bringing food home....

yes making the choices especially in that type of restraunt is difficult.. I have not ventured into chinese or japanese food yet.. I loved it in the past and not sure I could make good choices.. portion size does matter though and like b52 I always bring food home no matter where we eat... sometimes I split my dinner with a friend or husband... he doesn't eat like I do and only likes fried foods and gravy.. so we don't eat the same...

If possible google the place you are going or look up the places you go to most often and see if they have nutrtion info on their website. I have done this to help myself.

When eating out there are general rules of thumb. Don't go for fried (Genral Tso's while yummy is fried the drench is a calorie layden sauce- avoid this). Most asian places have things like chicken and brocolli or mooshu chicken- just don't get the rice and egg role.

Google is your friend- use it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
