PRE filled band (during surgery)

Recommended Posts

I was told that my band would be filled during surgery (on Friday) and it would only be a little amount. When I asked how much, they said the doctor would decide during surgery. Is this typical? Many of you have said you got your 1st fill 4-6 weeks after surgery. TIA!

Exact same for me. He said they typically put in 3cc at surgery but he determines the right amount in surgery. He put in only 1cc for me at surgery. So yeah, I would say its normal. :)

..and how has your "restriction" been? Have you had any subsequent fills?

Same here......determined at the time of surgery. But the way my doctor does it.......he fills the band & then lets all the Fluid run out (something along those lines). Whatever the band maintains, is what he leaves. For me, that was about 3cc.

My surgeon puts the band in unfilled because he said that some people experience nausea after surgery and he doesn't like to see patients throwing up with a filled band. I have only 1cc right now and lost 49 lbs so far and didn't even get a fill at my second appointment yesterday!

to answer a question asked, I had a "fake" full because of all the gas I experience. I feel too full, too fast because of the quick gas buildup but had a fill last week of 1.6 cc and my restriction is not much I think. I eat small portions cause I really don't want to get stuck but so far, I can basically eat any meat (except for steak that I haven't tried yet). So I think I might feel restriction at my next fill but that will not be until August since I am leaving for 2 months and won't see my doctor. Good luck.

Hi

my band was filled during surgery 3cc I think. It turned out to be too much , too soon for me. Had a hard time recovering from surgery and Dr had to unfill. Once he did I got use to my band and had a fill about 6-8 wks after surgery. Good luck on your journey : ) I was banded 2 yrs ago and I'm down 100pds.

I was banded last Friday 5/31 and I ended up having a hernia as well. My doctor also filled me 3cc. I have been able to eat liquids. But I thought it was strange he filled me up so much.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
