Hi All-

Curious if anyone traveled (for work or otherwise) immediately before or after their surgery... I have been approved and this week expect to get my date scheduled. The challenge is I need to travel the last week in June for work. I'm starting to think it's unlikely I'll get a date before I travel - but I might need to be on the liquid diet while I'm traveling. has anyone done this? was it doable for you? i'll be busy with work, which I think will help - but i also will need to be "on" and high-energy during these days and I'm nervous i'll be tired and/or grumpy when living on Protein shakes alone.

Would love any and all advice! I'm really torn between wanting the surgery as soon as possible and wondering if i need to pick a date that allows me to do my pre-surgery diet when I'm home.

thanks!!

I was scheduled to take a cruise to the Bahamas in April of last year. I opted to wait until June for my surgery. Though a cruise is a lot different than the travel you're talking about, I wanted to be cooped up in my house during my liquid diet. That way no one would see me cranky and aggravated and there would be no temptation. Lol

If it were me, I'd like the distraction of work and travel while on the pre op diet. Whatever you choose, good luck!

I would rather travel before than after! Travel tends to make my band unhappy, especially if I have to fly.

Traveled right up to 4 days before surgery, but as I had no pre-op diet, there was no issue.

Traveled locally (4 hr freeway each way and an overnight) 5 days post-op, no problem with the travel component, BUT: the purpose was me giving a 90 technical seminar to some 70-odd people. While I would have SWORN I knew my material in my sleep (this is something I do routinely in my position), I was stumbling through it, foggy and light headed and my incisions started hurting from all the loud talking....so depending on your level of required "up", know that your energy levels are very different for the first few weeks.

Just completed my first plane trip post-op (social weekend in Seattle) and no problems...but I am also on solids as of last Wednesday

I agree that travel may be a distraction, but if you are going to travel during the liquid stages, be prepared to carry stuff with you to eat/drink.

Thank you all so much for the responses! I was so excited to get this scheduled that I called the office even though I was told they'd contact me. Only to be told i needed to wait until the official scheduler calls me which might not be until next week. Given vacations happening in their office, I suspect I won't get a date until July which means (at least for this June trip) I won't be traveling immediately after being banded, but I might be in the early days of the liquid diet. It does sound like the distraction of work could be helpful in that dept! In general I find the days I'm busier I am less hungry anyhow.
