Time between consult and surgery

Recommended Posts

I also have BCBS. They gave a pre-approval with a BMI of 35 and pre-existing conditions that are directly related to being over weight - high blood pressure, just dianosed with dibeties, sleep apena, and fatty liver. Just had my psy eval and going for the endoscopy next week. Then all paperwork will be submitted to BCBS for official approval. I'm shooting for August for surgery due to work committments in July. Hopefully all will work out. Already getting excited about finally losing this weight.

I met with my PCP in Dec 2012 and she referred me to my surgeon who I first met for a consult on Jan 9th. I was just (today) approved for surgery. In between then and now I saw a nutritionist several times and a psychiatrist - both of whom had to clear me, and the surgical practice also required attending 3 monthly support group meetings. I also had to see my PCP for a letter supporting the surgery and to be cleared medically for surgery. My weight/BMI qualify me for surgery and I have no other co-morbity factors. Insurance is thru CIGNA. It was hard to come to the decision for surgery over 6 months ago and then still have the steps take a while, but all things considered I think I've had a fairly smooth process.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
