Hello Ladies,

We met with the principal of our daughter's school today. She's staying with the Christian School where she attends preschool now. This school goes from age 2 - 8th grade. This private school gig is an expensive habit. WE went over the kindergarten curriculum - woah. Atleast, I know that my daughter is totally prepared. They tested her for reading placement in the fall. She just read The Best Me off the computer screen.

Right now they are reading small books wiht three word sentences.

My husband goes back to grad school this week, he's gonna have a fun summer. He should be ready to graduate in December. I am still weighing my options for school. I was taking an elementary education program but now I'm dabbling with the idea of going to be a paralegal. Anything beats what I'm doing now, with my college degree.

The weight loss has slowed down some. I see dr b next week for my 3 month appointment. I am not going to be attending lunch saturday due to Husband's school.

I am so glad Karen is on her way to band land. Next is Wavy...

Take Care all... I haven't followed up with the spine dr this week like I was supposed to, I think I'm going to see our primary dr again regarding the back, plus talk with Dr B about it.

I have been reading some great books by kristin billerbeck and they are really cute (chick books). I'm Off....

Jennifer

Hi there! My name is Tonya and I live in Asheville. It seems that most of the people on this board are in Charlotte. Are the any WNC people out there? Would like to find some to talk to!

A little about me: I am not banded yet. I went to the info session at Mission Bariatric here in Asheville a little over a year ago. They have an arbitrary maximum weight that have to be under in order for them to do the surgery. I have tried and tried to get there, but with no support I just can't get there. :cry I am currently looking at other options. I have BCBS and have looked at the "Surgical Centers of Excellence". The closest one to me that does the lap band seems to be Concord or Charlotte, both of which are at least 2 hours away, and even with that I'm not sure if they'll pay for the lap band. Anyway, I'm glad I found this board! Talking to other people in NC who are banded is great!

Welcome aboard Tonya! I don't know much about BCBS in this area, but there are some fine lap-band doctors in the Charlotte area. I hope everything works out for you. You may want to call around and see if any of them have maximum weights too?

If you don't mind the trip, we'd love to have you join us for our monthly lunch meetings. Our next meeting is this Saturday, May 20th, 11:30 a.m. at Ruby Tuesdays at I-77 & Arrowood Rd.

Welcome Tonya - Oh we love new people. Banded or not....I work for my surgeon now - BCBS of NC doesn't approve the band. They think it's still investgatorial (sp). WHATEVER!!!! I want to fight it but because I have the band already I can't do a whole lot. I have BCBS of NC now but thank goodness I work for the surgeon. They (BSBC) is suppose to look over it again this Aug so just maybe they will open their eyes and start approving it. There are surgeons who have a max BMI and there are some that will take on the higher cases. I would call around...We have a lot of patient from out of the state...so many travel.

Good Luck on your journey and we are here for you ever step of the way... Hope to hear from you soon!!!!

The Charlotte Area does meet once a month so we would love to have you join us if you could make it. :D Make a day of it...go shopping @ concord mills...or something.

Ok ladies how is everyone else...only 2 more days we are getting together...as Angie would WOOT!! WOOT!!! I am so excited about seeing you all. You know in just under a month I will at one year...WOW what a year.

Curtis graduated from his 2yr class and will be going to the 3 yr old class next school year. It makes me sad...but it makes me happy I am getting closer to really wanting another and this time I am not taking any meds - we are going to do it w/o help...

Well have a great Thursday night...

Hey Tonya! I'm a WNC banded person! I live in Hiddenite, which is about 30 minutes from Hickory.:welcome2:

I've heard about some surgeons having a maximum weight restriction, and I think that's a bunch of you-know-what! Dr. Bauman in Concord is my doctor, and he's wonderful. There are several doctors around Concord and Charlotte that are great, and to me the drive is worth it. I just look at it as, what's a couple hours drive worth versus my health and life? Plus, I don't have to go to the doctor every week or anything anyway, so it's not really bad at all.

I am a teacher, so I have the teachers' and state employees coverage. It's contracted through BCBS I think, and it doesn't pay for lap-band.:D My husband and I (and my parents) did everything possible to get us the money for me to self-pay. I have never regretted it for a second, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

I love Asheville! I've been there lots of times, and it's beautiful there! I don't get to post on here as much as I would LOVE to, but I did want to say "hello" and welcome you!

Hi Tonya...I'm a Charlotte gal myself. I have gotten to work with both of the two top docs in the area for lapband...started with Dr. Vollinger...but due to time issues ended up with Dr. Bauman in concord. I'd recomend either of these doctors.

Asheville is a beautiful area, we lived there 15 years ago for a breif time and I didn't appreciate it much at the time, because I was young and thought, there was NOTHING to do. Last time I was there it has really grown. If you can make it down to one of our meetings that would be great...we are a bunch of laughs when we get together.

Wow, if I don't loose any weight for a few days, I can't blame anyone but myself. I just had a large serving of ben and jerrys. I haven't had ice cream in like .....forever. It was just a "ice cream" kinda of day. Kristen and her friends are being emotional butts now that it so close to them splitting up. They are all going to different high schools. Day care tonight was CRAZY...I don't think it could have gotten any louder with all the screaming babes. Not to mention the trio of brothers that all had to beat on each other constantly. The other gals were talking about going out for a drink after....I hit the ice cream. Guess I am a stress / emotional eater afterall.

Please say a prayer for me; I go to a pain specialist on Monday for a cortisol injection for my pinched nerve. I've never had one, and I don't know exactly where they'll put it, so I'm a tad nervous. Since 16 days of NSAIDS and two rounds of Medrol didn't cut it, I'm really hoping this relieves my pain.

Ok I so glad that I get see you girls today. I can't tell you how much I love our time together. It's so refreshing.....being around bariatric patients all the time there just aren't alot of banded people out there so it's nice to be w/ you all. I loved the kids - they were so cute. It kinda made me want a girl....you know I am a boy momma. hehe...

So go ahead and mark your calendar for June 17th. Now that is the saturday before Father's day...is that ok w/ you all. If not we can change it to July. (Angie you can bring the extra kids, there will be plenty of adults there.) Thoughts?

Ok so I need to tell someone this - it's killing me!!!!

We are planning a surprise party for my in-laws. They both turn 50 this year. So my SIL asked me to go back and get some pictures and look on her pc for some pictures. So I did WELL I saw some I shouldn't have seen. Just my MIL but I have now seen more of her then I ever needed to see or dream of seeing!!!! OMG....I am scared for life..shoudln't she have a lock on that file or something. HELLO.

So this is a lesson learned to all you people if you have kids that are going to plan a suprise party for you one day and you are a little active don't store them on the PC where anyone can find them.

DH has been at the beach w/ them all weekend...he came home and I couldn't even look at him the same...it's just weird.

Ok now I feel better telling someone....but oh my I am never going to look at her the same. I never thought my in-laws were like that!!!

Ok so since I was traumatized today how is everyone else?:)

Put a lock on the file or something. You never know who will be looking in there. That sure would be a surprise if you used those pictures, now wouldnt it? hehehe

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
