Help on chewing and swalloing

Recommended Posts

I am 5 months post surgery and I am in need of advice, my last full was like 5 weeks ago and since then things are hard to swallow. My husband had the same surgery a year and a half ago and he told me to swallow in small portions but its not working, it's hard remembering...how do you do it? I need advice...I am basically throwing after my first few bites because its stuck and I can't eat or breath anymore. And is it bad to make myself throw up? Help me please

I am in a similar boat as you. I had my last fill weeks ago and since then I have had a hard time eating as well. Lots of stuck episodes and PBing. It's been terrible. Aside from that, I've been making poor food choices because things like that tend to slide for me somehow. What I did notice, is that without even realizing, I have lost motivation to keep up the momentum I had going for me. I completed stopped paying attention to crucial techniques such as chewing a lot before swallowing and cutting my food into smaller bites. My NP told me me that as you get more and more filled these techniques become more and more crucial. Boy was she right! These past few days I have made a conscious effort to slow my pace, chew better, and cut smaller pieces and it has helped a lot!

Just take your time! Remember that when you eat with people you do not need to eat on their pace. Keep your techniques and don't give in! You can do this!

yes, throwing up is bad

if you cant swallow, you may be tooo tight

and not being able to eat/drink is so not worth being super tight

take wee bites, chew alot, go slow---back to basics

wishing you all the best honey

Sounds like you might be too tight but if it is because you are taking big bites that might also be the cause. First try eating with baby spoons or forks it really really helps force you to take small bites and has really helped me. Also either use a stop watch or watch the clock and only take a bite once a minute... I just started timing my bites yesterday and it has really helped.

Just take smaller bites and chew chew chew. It is easy to fall out of the habit of chewing enough which will make swallowing harder. If this does not help, you may be to full. Call your Doctor or NP to dicsuss.

This is awesome advice. Thanks for posting this. I am in the same boat. I think I'm finally at the sweet spot but I'm not taking small enough bites and eating too fast. I will do this!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
