Hi All, I am extremely new to this. I am considering HIGHLY getting lap band done. I was going to do it three years ago but wasn't in a position that I could. Things have changed and I am excited to get my life back and be healthy. I want to know how long from your 1st meeting as a group for info to when you had surgery? I am worried about losing the 20% I need to lose. I can't even lose 10lbs!! Thanks for feedback

Are you on a 6 month monitored diet? I do not understand the 20% number. Is this from your doctor?

Welcome aboard Mom! I also mulled over having the surgery for a few years...convinced that the next diet I tried would work and I could finally lose the weight and keep it off. That didn't happen and here I am today, just shy of a month from being banded. My entire process has been:

April 9 - Scheduled Appointment with True Results, Houston

April 11 - First Appointment/Initial Consultation - all testing (blood, urine, EKG, respiratory function test, etc.) except Psych eval completed on this visit, approximately 2 hours.

April 13 - Psych eval completed.

April 22 - Psych eval report submitted to True Results.

April 26 - Package sent to BCBS for final approval.

April 29 - BCBS Approval!

April 30 - True Results receives approval letter, submits to surgeon.

May 6 - Surgeon's office calls to schedule Preop and surgery - bump in the road, doctor has a tight schedule and is going on vacation...delay!

June 4 - Preop appointment

June 19 - Surgery scheduled.

So, had it not been for the doctor being overbooked and taking vacation, I cold have had my surgery as early as May 17. No big deal, I realize I am still going through the "emotional phases" of this process and to rush into it would have been a mistake, so I look at it as a blessing in disquise. Yes, I wanted to hurry up and get it done so I could see substantial results by mid-summer, but that's okay. Thanks to the decision to get a band, I expect many more great summers and bathing suits than I would have without it. Good luck to you my friend and please keep us posted!!!

P.S. - you only need to lose 10 - 20lbs. prior to surgery. If you could lose 20% of your weight on your own, you wouldn't need the band...now would you? Trust me, the preop diet will get those pounds off...if you follow doctors orders.

I'm really new to this, but it looks like I could potentially be banded in July or August. My seminar was May 6. My insurance requires me to lose 10% prior to submission of approval. So, right now I'm in the process of losing that along with the other requirements.

I went to the required seminar the first of April 2012, went to my first surgeons appointment was May 3rd and I had surgery June 22nd. So mine went FAST and could have gone faster had I wanted it to. After the seminar I hemed and hawed over meeting with the surgeon once I did, thing moved. Granted, I took the bull by the horns- I got all the orders from my surgeon and I faxed and called to set up everything and got it done by the end of May. I waited to have surgery until June 22 due to my work schedule.

I had my group seminar on Aug 10, 2009. Saw the dr on Aug 18th, nutritonist and psych eval on Sep 10th, and surgery on oct 1 (a little more than 6 weeks total). I had no insurance hoops to jump thru tho. most people have a required diet they have to complete. I didn't even have a pre op diet.

Good luck!

Marci

Thank You all for your imput. I just heard you had to lose 20% but like LBT addict said if I could lose that anyway wouldn't I just keep going?

Welcome!

Talk to your insurance company because they all have different requirements. I was lucky, I didn't have to do any pre op diet at all. I had my original seminar then had my surgery just 3 weeks later. It went really fast.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
