Two Days After Surgery Questions

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery on Monday, and I'm wondering why I am on liquids and told I can advance to pureed food in a week. I don't get my band's first 'fill' until 6 weeks. As far as medication goes, I was told I can swallow a pill no larger then a peanut m&m. Just wondering why you have to slowly advance to thicker foods now, and not after the band gets a fill?

Because you are healing inside from the surgery. Please follow docs orders, it is important now not to damage your band! Best wishes.

You are on liquids so you can heal from surgery. Your stomach is not ready for anything more than that. As you heal a bit, you move to pureed food. However your doctor has the post-op diet progression laid out, follow it.

When you get a fill in a few weeks, you will probably have to be on liquids again for a day or two; maybe more. Again, that is to give your stomach time to heal from the fill. It's not nearly as bad as surgery, but there can be some swelling.

I questioned my doctor about the diet progression, and he told me flat out that patients who jump ahead prematurely, are the ones who have issues with the band. If you have a lot of questions about why you've been instructed to do things a certain way, call your doctor & talk to someone there. They should be able to clarify the "when, what and why" of the whole process.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
