Hello my peeps! I am 10 days post op and had a hiatal hernia repair done with my lap band. Did anyone else have this done? I am noticing as I'm eating my cream of chicken Soup (prepared with fat free milk) that there is a bit of tenderness in my mid breastbone area as it is going down. I have removed any chicken bits and it's only soup. I just experienced this sensation yesterday and now again today. Thoughts from the peanut gallery???

Same here...the tenderness I think is normal...you're still sensitive from surgery, its only been 10 days. I find alot of my pain comes from gas...and more gas...lol Its faily new to me 2 as I was banded May 3 and had a few problems but I hope for the best. Hang in there, you'll probably be seeing him soon anyways for your first post op visit. Cheers

I had my hiatal hernia repaired at the same time also (and glad I did). I've never had any heartburn since. I'm sure the tenderness you have is from the surgery. I remember being surprised at how difficult creamy Soups were compared to other liquids (and even mushies). It should go away soon for you. :)

I was told the allot of people have H.Hernia's and are totally unaware they even have one. I didn't know about mine until after surgery and they told me they repaired it. It's actually a "good Thing" to have it repaired prior to, or at the time of LB surgery. Again some people experience problems with the band due to an un-diagnosised H.H. Being just 10 days post-op your going to feel all sorts of little aches and pains it's just the body healing. So long as it's nothing severe/on going and accompanied by a fever I think your safe... But don't ask me I can't have Peanuts due to Diverticulitis ;)

yes i did and didnt even know i had one much less what one was..

it hurt to take deep breaths (and using that little blue machine for a week hurt like a bit*h)

but it will gt better each day that passes...eating too fast or too much at a time will cause discomfort (even early banded as you are still very swollen)...go slow and heal.....best of luck hon

I had one repaired too (that I didn't know I even had either) at the time of getting my band. I am 6 days post op, and experience the same tenderness/tightness when swallowing anything thicker than Water. It does seem easier every day. It surprises me that they are so common.

I found out about mine during endoscopy for lap band surgery. then got referred by weight loss doctor to Thoracic

surgeon and had a second endoscopy and on my day of surgery I had to doctors working on me. Have had not problems with the band or hernia that I did not know I had. Seems as if this is common.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
