Anyone do a pre preop diet?

Recommended Posts

I scheduled my surgery for June, but am having to push it back to August just due to school and scheduling issues. I'm motivated to lost some weight in the few months until then, though, and I really want to get a jump start on it, as well as get used to the preop diet. Did anyone do the liquids and 1 meal preop diet before you had to? I was thinking just for one week and then try to eat as healthy as I can and work out before my surgery.

I've had numerous pre-op preop diets over the last 30 years.....I could not wait to get the band surgery to free me from all that....

But if you feel it will help with your weight loss, go for it....

I didn't do the shakes pre op, but did diet for the 6mths before surgery, trying different Protein shakes along the way. Also ate by the bandsters rules, smaller bites, practice chewing everything down to mush, drinking my 64 oz of Water. Practice makes perfect.lol At least thats what they say.

I only lost 20lbs, but was able to avoid the 2wk nothing but shakes diet before surgery.

I do feel it helped to have all the sugar and bad carbs out of my system. While others were crying b/c they were" so hungry", I really had no real problems.

Nothing like getting your body into the best shape possible, before surgery.

Wishing you nothing but the best

I'm pre-op. My insurance co (Tri-Care) requires a period of time to learn healthy eating and weight loss prior to surgery. Prior to seeing the nutritionist I had given up soda which was huge for me. My surgeon gets in my face and says, you are fat because you are addicted to food. I was warned before I got in there with him (I had my big girl panties on thank goodness). Also helped that he spoke from experience--he and his complete staff are banded.

The surgeon staright off said get down to 30 carbs a day. Once I looked at food lables I was shocked.

Several weeks later I saw the nutritionist--now I don't eat rice, Pasta, potatoes. I'm gluten free, so I already don't eat bread.< /p>

So, 30 carbs...totally doable!

You really need this "pre" pre-op time to learn a new way of eating and that eating is truly overrated. We've been eating all our lives, some of us longer than others. I really wanted to jump in and get that surgery pronto quick. I know now, that had I done that, it would have been disasterous. We have to really learn, understand and come to grips with how we got here first.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
