Newbie with some questions: 16 days in since surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

(If I breach protocol in any way, just tell me. )

I'm a 49 year old man living in Manhattan. Tried EVERYTHING including rehab, you know the drill. Had flawless LB surgery May 1st, was back at office May 6th, and have been doing well. The incisions are healing fast, though sometimes they are a tiny bit sore at the end of the day, which one advil solves. So 19 days in, or 30 if you include pre-surgery diet. Since my heaviest before that diet I've progressed from 304 lbs. to 275.2 lbs, or -28.2 lbs., which seems great to me. BTW, haven't had first fill. My energy is good and so is my mood.

Ok, now my questions:

1. I am on mushy right now and can go to solid food, but am a little fearful about doing so. Protein shakes and mushy foods seem so easy to control, and I don't want to revert to bad binge-y habits (though I have absolutely no desire to do so right now) Is this fear/anxiety normal? It's pretty mild but real.

2. To get enough liquids between my meals seems like I'm always timing them and then trying to fit enough in.

3. Hardest part of this whole process has been managing my pills from other stuff, downsizing all of them to pretty small, and taking more of them. Yet many say you can't have ANY. My nurse says if they are small enough and taken with food I should be fine. What are your experiences?

Overall I feel pretty grateful and serene. 11 days til the first saline.

Welcome!! :D

Your fears are normal but try not to let them get the best of you. Once you progress back to normal foods you'll be getting much better nutrients which will actually help you both lose more weight and be healthier. Plus, a big part of the band journey is learning to eat healthy foods in healthy portions. Before you have adequate Fluid in your bad sticking to band sized portions is a bit rough but once you're in the Green Zone is shockingly easy.

2. To get enough liquids between my meals seems like I'm always timing them and then trying to fit enough in.

That's normal. I still pretty much constantly have Water or iced green tea and am constantly sipping.

3. Hardest part of this whole process has been managing my pills from other stuff, downsizing all of them to pretty small, and taking more of them. Yet many say you can't have ANY. My nurse says if they are small enough and taken with food I should be fine. What are your experiences?

Personally, I've never had a problem with a pill. I take multiple pills daily without the slightest problem and a couple aren't exactly small, either. I am just careful to either eat or drink warm liquids first to make them easier to swallow.

Best wishes on your journey!

Thank you Mis73! I was wondering if I was doing something wrong because I'm basically drinking liquids nearly all day except around meals. Partially because one of my other meds is a diuretic which makes me quite thirsty. Water and Vitamin Water Zero are my vices.

I've progressed from 304 lbs. to 275.2 lbs, or -28.2 lbs., which seems great to me.AWESOME!! and congratulations on your WL so far... BTW, haven't had first fill. My energy is good and so is my mood.

Ok, now my questions:

1. I am on mushy right now and can go to solid food, but am a little fearful about doing so. Protein shakes and mushy foods seem so easy to control, and I don't want to revert to bad binge-y habits (though I have absolutely no desire to do so right now) Is this fear/anxiety normal FEAR is a good thing ;) or at least it was for me...and eventually YOU WILL get tired of liquids. Enjoy your progress. It's pretty mild but real.

2. To get enough liquids between my meals seems like I'm always timing them and then trying to fit enough in Why are you trying trying so hard with your liquids? are you referring to just getting in Water? On average a water bottle holds 16.9 ounces (store bought) and 5 of those a day is ample Water intake( to avoid dehydration).

3. Hardest part of this whole process has been managing my pills from other stuff, downsizing all of them to pretty small, and taking more of them I never had much luck with Large pills :( anything larger 1/4 in in diameter gave me problems (got stuck) But my Doc always said to crush them or cut them in half(some meds, not meant to be cut)

11 days til the first saline.GOOD LUCK on your Journey ..it seems like you have a great attitude !!

Thanks redhead for your post! I'm 3 days post op & so far so good! I'm a little fearful about the transition to the mushies even though I have more days to go on liquids. I just DO NOT want to throw up! That's my biggest fear :)

I love this group! Thank God for you guys & your input

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
