First starting to exercise

Recommended Posts

I just set my surgery date for June 21st last week, so now I'm becoming really motivated to be as prepared as I can before then! I know we're pretty much limited to walking for a while after surgery so I starting walking today with my dog. I have that Endomondo app on my phone that tracks how far/fast I go and I went .78 miles today in about 15 minutes, so I'm okay with that! I really wanted to do a mile today, but it was really hot out, I probably shouldn't go at 1pm in Texas in the summer lol. So what are some other ways y'all got into the routine of working out when you're obviously not in good enough shape to go run a few miles or do crossfit or anything? I actually like going to the gym when I make myself go lol.

I just started walking around the block just about 2 weeks ago, I walk in the morning I live in Texas also, it is getting to hot now to walk any later in the day. What part do you live in? I live in Haslet north of Fort Worth. That's great you will have almost a month of walking under your belt that should help out a lot. I'll a have about 3 weeks, my surgery is the 28th of this month. Good luck with your journey.

I just started walking yesterday. The community center where I live has an indoor walking track ...hooray for air conditioning. I ended up joining the fitness center too so I can start doing strength exercises too. I walked 2 miles in 29 minutes :)....my first mile was much better than the second because I started getting a blister on my foot! :( I used endomondo too and it links it right to my fitness pal! Love it!

Hands down, exercise is the worst part for me! I just don't enjoy it. Just about the only exercise I can say I like is bike riding.

As I try to get back on track, I am trying to get better about exercise, so I am riding for at least 30 min most days and I try to walk at lunch time also. Perhaps next month after I return from vacation I will re-join the Y - again! Just getting there is such a chore!

I haven't heard of the Endomondo app - I'll have to check it out. I like that it can link with My Fitness Pal because that seems to be working for me too.

Heard exercise helps stress, and I had one heck of a weekend, so last night in the dark, at the high school track, I took a step. Then another, then another....

Three miles. No partner, no ipod, just unwinding my head. It helped.

Tonight, three miles again. Ipod this time. Kinda proud of myself for a change.

What part of Texas? I'm in Houston area but I just resigned up at the gym. My thing is I was told no treadmills for at least a month and that's the easiest thing at the gym so I have to wait to start up :(

What helped me the most, was the Map my Walk app. Makes me want to do better than the day before. Right now I mostly walk the football track and sometimes a park not far from here. Has really helped get me to walking every single day.

Nothing wrong with doing what you "like".

No matter If its cycling/walking/running/swimming/etc...any and all is good. The best one is the one you will do!

I started out cycling LESS than 30 minutes at a time, only 10-15 minutes at first, then needed a break...I was winded after a couple of miles!

Then gradually building up my tolerance ENJOYMENT of it. After finding what works for you, just continue to do it. I've read from runners they feel the same as I do now, its addicting! :)

Good on you for getting a headstart!

You will be successful in the long term if you find exercises that you enjoy so much that you look forward to them. Try to find a number of activities so that you don't end up getting bored.

Two years out I cycle two to four times a week, walk several mornings, dance up to two times a week and swim once a week. Cycling and dancing are both social activities but with different groups of friends. Walking is either alone or with my husband so a good time for us together. Swimming is a solitary activity but I plug in my underwater MP3 player and just go for about 50 minutes.

When exercise feels like work, it is much harder to get started and to keep going.

Best of luck

The more you exercise before your surgery, the faster you will want to jump in and start exercising when the doctor clears you. Congratulations on your Day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
