Surgery after c-section/breastfeeding.

Recommended Posts

I have been planning on getting the lap-band for a couple of years. I was in pre-op when they told me to go home I was pregnant. That was in July of 2012. I had a c-section March of 2012. Waited to heal, savings was drained so had to start over again. I started a weight loss plan about 4 months ago, lost weight and bam I got pregnant again. My baby is due in December, and I'm hoping to have the surgery in January 2014. My first question is how soon after a c-section(I'll be having another one) can I get the surgery and question two is, can I have the surgery while i'm breastfeeding? Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert but it seems like you should wait until you are fully healed from the section which is 6-8 weeks. I have had three c sections. As far as breast feeding, I think the biggest concern will be supply since you are going to be restricting calories. If breast feeding is important to you I would hold off personally. I had a major surgery when I was still breast feeding my now 7 year old. I waited until she was one. I had my surgery 8 days later knowing that if I dried up that I had breast fed for my goal of 12 months. She ended up nursing for three more months before self weaning but my supply was never the same. I'd wait six months personally and spend that time with your baby and healing.

Surgery will be tough with a newborn, unless you have a great support system. It was hard for me with two preschoolers and my mom stayed to help me for two Weeks. There is a great chance of drying up with such little calories. I ate and drank like crazy while bfing. definitely pursue Lapland of u want, but enjoy your baby, don't rush it!

Any respectable surgeon would not do a surgery on someone who just had a baby. They would expect you to try to lose the post baby weight on your own. And considering that you've gotten pregnant twice unplanned you would really need to make sure that you didn't have another oopsie once you get your band for at least a year.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
