So I was banded yesterday 5/13. I keep feeling like I have stuff in my lungs but it hurts too bad to cough to get it cleared up. Does anyone have any tips in how to do this without feeling like I'm being stabbed?

Hold a pillow across your belly to help support it when you cough. Don't suppress the cough especially if you feel there are secretions you don't want it to turn into pneumonia. Walk, take some deep breaths, drink plenty of Water, take pain meds as needed and support your belly as you cough. (that's the nurse in me coming out! )

Yea I tried the pillow and I've been doing all the other stuff too. Every time I barely cough I feel like my incisions are gonna bust open.

I had to cough too and I knew how important it was. I'm a week past surgery and I didn't bust any stitches. Just hold it tight and cough!

I had some coughing too- didn't break anything- it hurts for the first 3-4 days, but gets better after that.

The suggestions here are good. As soon as they pulled the oxygen mask off of me when I was in post-op recovery room I had a couple deep coughs. It hurt like hell but cleared me out very well and I could breathe much better! Good luck!!

did they give you the little breathing machine?

if so, use it...you want to keep your lungs clear..so cough even if it hurts

and yes, it will stop ....congrats on your surgery

Yea I have the breathing thing and I've been using it. It was getting to the point where I couldn't breathe unless I coughed and got it up. It was extremely painful but I feel better now. No more wheezing.

Coughing and sneezing are the worst. A pillow helps. I sneezed last night and broke out inot a cold sweat it hurt so much. It does go away. Congrats on your surgery. Now the fun begins! :)

Thank you! I'm so excited for this journey. I refuse for this to fail like all the other diets. If I'm going through all this pain it will all be worth it!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
