Reduced appetite after surgery - What Gives?

Recommended Posts

I understand that the band is inserted without any Fluid, yet I know my appetite is significantly less than what it was before surgery. I am day 4 post-op, my diet is partly full liquid and partly mushy. I haven't eaten whole foods yet, but think I will be able to tomorrow. I'm drinking plenty of Water (liquids) between meals and I'm making sure I get at lest 60 grams of Protein everyday. But I'm still only eating 600 - 800 calories a day. What is causing my appetite suppression if there is not fill in the band? Did others experience this? How long does this last? Your experiences are appreciated - Amanda

Enjoy it while it lasts, many of us, including myself had greatly diminished appetites after surgery. I started counting calories because of I simply wasn't getting enough, I count calories for an entirely different reason now. :)

I was banded about two and a half weeks ago. For the first week I was always under calories and I had zero appetite. about two weeks youll get it back...until then enjoy not being starving :) like you probably were on the pre op diet if you had one :). Good luck to you! I feel great now!!!

Swelling after the surgery makes you feel less hungry, as your body heals you will have an increased appetite. You can live off your body weight for months, so not to worry, just make sure you are staying hydrated. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the comments. I will consider this a vacation, knowing it won't last. And in 4 weeks I will have my first fill to help bridge the hunger pains.

I had surgery a week ago today. I feel the exact same way. I have to remind myself to eat. That isn't normal for me!! Lol I've also heard to enjoy it while it lasts! :)

The band presses on a nerve called the vagus nerve, which sends the signal to our brain that we are full. Even just the pressure of the empty band can have this effect.

I was banded 4 days ago, and is the same thing here! I'm not eating at all, drinking Water and Chrystal light though. My doctor told me than my band has already 3cc on it, so it was not empty and I had my hernia repaired so I don't really feel like eating at all. Even thinking about food make me really nauseous. Well, I guess I need to enjoy this while it lasts like you said :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
