I have the band 3 yrs. I still have about 25 lbs to lose. I have done well. So for mothers day i went to my mother in laws(yes I am a good daughter in law.) She made sure i knew she had salad stuff, Cause everyone losing weight must eat salad. Grrrrr, salad doesn't always go well thats why i eat it at home only. Anyway she says to me when are you going to get that apparatus taken out? huh i say. There is no reason unless there is trouble. She said can it be moved down. Down for what. What the heck is she talking about. Then I hear her say don't you think it is time for you to start working on those arms of yours. I then try and explain to her that there is no such thing as spot training and after working out in the gym doing cardio till i wanna drop, weights, etc why didn't i think of that. I explained to her i was told there is only one way to get rid of it and it is called surgery!! After three yrs i am tired of trying to explain these things.

To those of you who will say to me well people don't understand or know, really this is my rant. This was all explained to her over and over again. Is that how one should be spoken to on Mother's Day i say NOOOO.

Just a bit pissed off!

Holy cow, I have to tell you, you're a better woman than me. Mother in law or not, I'd have ripped her face off and told her off big time. She has NO right to speak to you that way!!!

Perhaps you can talk to your husband so he can speak to his (rude) mother on your behalf? You really don't need her drama and negativity.

That's funny that you posted this cause I am only 9 months out have lost 59lbs & 82 more to go but my mother just asked me after I get to my goal weight then do I get the band out or what happens do I keep going I told her I don't know we'll find out when that time comes , who knows I may have it for the rest of my life , maybe not ,right now I can't answer that question cause the time hasn't came, they are trying to understand but they really don't get it , my Mother is a HEAFTY woman but because she has heart problems her Doctors won't recommend it and I don't get that cause I think it would help her with her Diabetes and heart problems the woman can't even walk with out breathing hard and trying to catch her breath from the kitchen to the living room, so I don't get that, and I do Love my Mother but I am afraid for her and we are only 16 yrs. apart in age, ya I know crazy .

OMG - this is so offensive.....especially the remark about your arms! Aside from the fact that she doesn't listen, and doesn't care enough about you to REMEMBER what she's been told time and time again, to make ANY type of remark, other than how great you look, is unconscionable to me. How old is this woman?

When my (now deceased) mother was "losing it", she would ask me the same questions all the time; sometimes within the same conversation. Even knowing that she was on the decline, I would still get annoyed. But for your MIL to start picking on parts of your body.....AACK! I don't know if I could have kept my mouth shut. Unless, she is mentally declining......

I agree with Mis. There is no way possible that I would be able to have held back from going off on her. My MIL is such a supportive and positive person so I can't imagine her saying something like this. BUT, if she did I would be furious and without a doubt flip out on her Lol. You are a VERY strong person for not flipping out on her. Good for you. She clearly isn't worth it!! I'd tell your husband that he needs to talk to her! If my mom was that rude to my wife if be pi**ed!! I'm sorry that she's so inconsiderate, especially on Mother's Day!

Believe it or not ALLOT of people don't have a clue about the Lap Band, Medical professionals INCLUDED!! I had an Echo Tech say to me WOW you don't look like a person that was 70 lbs heavier? Umm... Thanks I think? But she did say but you look great now...lol I try not to get to infuriated with these people (family included) but instead try to explain to them Again if need be that what you've done is for YOUR Health. I often use sarcasm and then laugh, most people think I'm joking but I know I'm NOT and I feel better...

You Did great! and we all need to RANT on occasion ( rant away~) I do hope, you had a great Mother's day (in spite of the MIL)

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
