Any advice would be great. im on 2nd day post op

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I am on my 2nd day post op. I am having really bad pains from the gas and havent had a bowel movement since tuesday (the day before my surgery). I was told gas x helps and Miralax. any advice on if the strips or the chewables are easier to get down? i am feeling really tight in my chest area and can only drink Water and broth a little bit at a time.

any info would be helpful. i am starting to burp a little bit but i would prefer to have it come out the other end considering the burping hurts! thank you!

I've been using the strips which dissolve in your mouth. I prefer those, but haven't had the other. I had my first BM 4 days post op (with nothing to help, stool softener etc.). Good luck!! Hope it gets better!!

Walk walk walk walk walk. That's the only way to get gas out. Don't put a lot of stock in gasx because the gas isn't in your stomach proper...its in the cavity and will travel all over.

When your shoulder hurts use a heating pad.

Don't strain to poo...miralax will make it easier to go but if you did any preop diet you probably don't have a lot of anything waiting to cone out.

I did not use gas x.. however the gas is not really in your stomach it's the gas they used to inflate you.. it will work its way out but you need to walk about once an hour around your house.. move as much as you can without over doing it.. also I used some milk of mag and that resolved by bm issue and I felt so much better after that... I also used a heating pad on my shoulder and a pillow on my stomach when I got up and down... it will take about a week to start seeing some improvement.. best thing for you to do is drink as much as you can and rest as much as possible....

Definitely get the Gas-X strips. On my way home from the hospital, my husband ran into the drug store to pick up some Gas-X, but he got the chewable tables. My fault.....I told him to get those, because I didn't know that they had strips. ANYWAY, when you're feeling the way you are right now, chewing those tablets it pretty gross. But to be quite honest, the Gas-X didn't do anything for the type of gas that came from the surgery. I walked, which helped, but it just really needs to run its course. For me, it was a good two weeks.

I do agree that walking is better than any gas x that you can buy. But, the strips can't hurt either. But, don't substitute the strips for walking

Yes the Gas X and Miralax works great with walking every 30mins I'm 1 day post-op and I really good, you have to move move move, trust me I'm a nurse and walking will move that gas around. Laying in the bed is a bad thing and will only keep the gas in. Fill better soon keep me posted on how things are going.

For me, the chewables seem to work better. I also agree with walking walking walking then walk some more.

I didn't have a BM till a week post op, I don't want to scare you, but I had the most horrible experience when I did go..I wasn't allowed to take any Fiber of any kind. So if you're allowed to, take it!! Even if you're still on liquids..I'd rather have a runny BM than go through what I went through..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
