Brussels Sprouts - Soft Foods?

Recommended Posts

I wondered if anyone thinks that Brussels sprouts would be allowed in the soft-food diet period? Many veggies are "in" like broccoli, okra, cauliflower but spinach and lettuce are out. Brussels Sprouts aren't listed as allowed or not allowed.

Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place...

For me, brussel sprouts are the number ONE problem food. And I don't have many...at all. I have no idea why....I love them!

I love brussel sprouts and eat them 4 or 5 days a week and I have never had any problems with them.....I would imagine if they are cooked until soft then they would be perfectly fine to eat......maybe ask your nutritionist when you get a chance....Best Wishes :)

I love these forums.....SO many different post-op instructions...

I love brussel sprouts, but I'm not allowed to have veggies and (most) fruits until I'm 8-12 weeks post-op. I've questioned this at my office visits, and they say that because we can't drink with meals, veggies cause a lot of gas sitting in the stomach. I am allowed bananas, avocados and apple sauce, but nothing else from the "garden". I told them that I feel REALLY unhealthy not having greens & fresh fruit. But they tell me that it's setup that way for a reason. But I really like reading all the other protocols. Honestly, the other night I made a frozen Atkins meal; chicken with broccoli. My plan was to eat the chicken & toss the greens. Well, some of that broccoli made it onto my fork, and I was FINE. No gas.....no pain, nada. I've been pretty diligent with my program; not perfect, but good. But I'm not sure I can hang another 4-8 weeks without some veggies. I'm totally okay not eating Cookies and crap, but this piece of the puzzle makes no sense to me.

Has anyone else's doctor told them to hold off for 8-12 weeks on veggies? At the 8 week mark, I can have very soft cooked ones; but they give a list. Then at 12 weeks I can have the rest, including salad. I never thought I'd be craving fricken salad!! :P

I love them and cook them to a soft consistency. No problems for me, but I am slowly approaching the green zone and have to eat slow and chew them very well.

I wanted to have blended soups during that phase, but they said, no. So I followed their orders, as I've done (for the most part) since being banded. But I'm really struggling with fruit & vegetables. Not fruit as much as something.... green. I have only 12 more days until I can have soft cooked broccoli, green Beans, squash & carrots. Also - ripe melon and canned fruit (in it's own juice). Then 4 more weeks after that, all of the leafy greens and fruit. Although, they say to peel any fruit or veggie with a tough skin.

They seem to be very strange instructions but presumably they know what they are doing. What are you allowed to eat?

Wow!!! That is rough!! Who is your surgeon? I have noticed that the pre and post op instructions vary GREATLY between surgeons but this one takes the cake!

Did u have any other procedure done as well or just the band?

Based only on what you listed I would say no. They seem to be more like spinach and lettuce than the others.

Now I had completely different instructions and have/do eat them with no problems.

I had the Brussels sprouts twice over the past couple of days and they did not cause any issues! Yay!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
