Pre-Op High Protein Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Today has been really rough. I didn't realize that this liquid diet would be so challenging. Today was my first day and I almost wanted to cheat and eat something that I am not supposed to. My BIGGEST concern is getting enough grams of Protein. I am supposed to have 80-150 grams of protein a day. I am at 24 grams (2-8 oz. shakes) right now and I cannot get myself to drink anymore of these protein shakes... I've tried several different flavors and brands and I cannot get past the taste. Is there an alternative way to get the protein I need? I am going to call my dietician tomorrow to see what she suggests. My Pre-Op High Protein Diet consists of Protein Shakes, sf Jello, Water, ice chips, fat free/low sodium broth, and sugar free popsicles. These next two weeks are going to test my limits. Any advice or suggestions will be appreciated. :)

Bit pricey compared to some but I used Isopure from GNC. It's premixed and don't have the nasty Protein shake taste.

40 grams Protein in the 20 oz bottle and 0 sugars and carbs (I think it's 0 sugars its under 5 for sure)) it's also only 160 calories.

Red was my fave. The green apple melon was decent (not a apple person) but I couldn't stand the orange one...probably because that's the flavors of my chewable Vitamins.

You need more protein or you will be starving all the time.

I was banded this morning but all liquids was never fun. The head hunger is the worst part of it

I was having trouble drinking enough shakes for protein since the texture made me want to vomit so I called my dietician and asked her if I could have eggs and she told me I could have egg whites, which are low in calories and have a good amount of protein. Ask your dietician. Hope that helps.

The roughest for me was the first two days. Once I got to day 3, I had lost a lot of my appetite and nothing sounded good at all. I personally like the Protein Shakes when they are really cold, put mine in the freezer to become slushy, or blend the powder with ice/water. A lot of it is mind over matter. Good luck, you can do it!

Thanks everyone for the replies. Today is day two of the two week liquid diet. Last night I didn't finish all of my Protein Shake so I put it in the fridge overnight. This morning stirred it up and surprisingly it actually tasted ok. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
