MY PCP's REACTION TO MY WEIGHT LOSS

Recommended Posts

OK, so I started my pre-op on 12/14/12, my LB surgery was 12/28/12. I've lost a total of 45 lbs so far since 12/14/12.

Well, I saw my PCP on Monday 5/6. I had not seen him since February 6th.

The first words out of his mouth were, you only lost. 8 lbs. since I last saw you, that's not very much.

I wanted to cry, here I am thinking wow, I've lost 45 lbs in 5 months, that's pretty good or so I thought.

Mind you, my band is not working because my port flipped and I'm going for revision surgery, Fri., May 10th.

Anyway, I was kind of feeling down because of my primary care physician's remarks. I have no feeling of restriction or the sweet spot since my port flipped. My surgeon said he will give me a fill on Friday after he corrects the port.

Just curious, am I over reacting by my PCP's comments

Wow, I'd also be bummed out! :o

Next time just tell him that if he has nothing positive to say about your weight loss then he should keep his mouth SHUT!

As a medical professional, his manner does seem to be lacking...however it is also far healthier for you to be self validating with your progress.

What I mean by that is that you know how successful you have been. Rely on your own feeling of success to date. What others notice, or fail to notice should not take on a greater level of importance than your own feelings and beliefs about your progress.

Few people have mentioned my weight loss to me, and I'm not upset by it. I know that I have been reasonably successful with losing weight, and that's what matters most to me. I feel better, am regaining increased mobility, and no one could ever make me believe that I am anything but a success story in progress.

Best wishes for your continued success...

I Personally think your doing AWESOME! I have met very FEW Doctors with EMPATHY.

And I never allow a doctor to dictate my treatment, your losing weight, port problems will slow that loss. Even if you explained that to him most wouldn't care too many care about NUMBERS, it's a learned response. I had an M.D. like this I called her the Numbers Nazi  If the numbers weren't RIGHT then I must be doing something wrong. Needless to say I've had a new M.D. and we Discuss Treatment it's not dictated to me, were both happier.

KEEP up the great weight loss!!

I was a little opposite...at one time I was seeing a Cardiologist, Endocrinologist, Dermatologist, and my PCP all every 3 months....and everyone was skeptical the surgery was the best solution and if I should go through with it...although it was my PCP who referred me knowing it was my LAST resort.....

And now, they all want to take the credit for my success.....my Cardiologist is the worst...he was the most skeptical, and now he calls me HIS best patient and tells all his other patients aas though he had ANYTHING to do with the WLS.....

why on earth feel down my pet?

some people just have no clue nor raised with manners it seems...

that being said......you LOST weight since your last visit to the doctor

did you not?? you didnt not gain, is that right?

then i see no problem.....you keep losing at YOUR rate

it is not written down that you MUST lose 5 pounds a day or your head

will be chopped off.....everyone is different....you lose like you and not anyone else...so dry them baby tears....you lost 45 pounds (that is 9 bags of five pounds bag of sugar).......and that is just SWEET

No, I don't think you're overreacting. We all want to be validated and then when someone you trust with your health is anything but positive, well, it just doesn't feel very good. A little deflated. Don't let him get to you, you've done great even with the port flip. Soon you'll be right back at it and then you'll show him! Chin up!

So much good info and encouragement already....as well it should be. YOU are doing great! I am fortunate, as my PCP and surgeon were supportive, even when my band wasn't doing anything...nothing. It was just another diet...and I really started to get discouraged. Try not to let your PCP's lack of support/understanding determine how good you should feel about YOUR SUCCESS. You're going to get your port repaired, then your band will do its part. Best wishes for your continued success. :)

Let him know his words weren't helpful, and what is going on with you. Many PCP don't understand that the LB process and that it is slower. Also bring in food and Exercise logs to see if he has any suggestions.

I think I would have just Kicked his ass and fired that rat bastard.

Doctors forget they work for me. I pay his salary and if they are rude to me, there are plenty other doctors out there.

To be the Devil's advocate....Dr.'s sometimes see patients all day long, and put up with a lot of BS....sometimes you just want to smack the next person who starts on you.....so by the end of the day you can get very short and gruff....almost a "Here, take it or Leave" attitude.....

Not saying that was your Dr., nor am I making excuses...it just happens...Dr.'s are people too who put in long hours and have to hear everything......

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling better mentally but it did hurt initially to hear those comments. I 'm holding my chin up and I appreciate all the encouragement.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
