Food Stuck in Throat??

Recommended Posts

I haven't heard much discussion about this, but it's a real problem for me. Does anyone ever feel like the food is stuck in their throat? It feels like I have air keeping the food from even getting down to my band. I rarely have trouble with the golfball feeling around my band because some foods never get that far. I don't produce and spit up a lot of saliva like I do with a PB, but I do have to go "throw up" the food. I ate a handful of goldfish crackers earlier today and they got stuck and had to come up. There have been mornings when the same thing happens with one drink of milk. Can anyone help me with this?

AngieO,

I know the feeling that you are having. i just started my solids this week and I did experience that same feeling. I did read a post somewhere on here and they were suggesting that I hold my breathe and it will go down

I did and it worked

try it it may help you and good luck

I wonder if it is restriction? I explained it to the fill doctor and she said that she didn't think it was but she's not banded so can't really understand what I'm describing. I'm planning to go in on Monday for my 3rd fill because when I do eat, I don't fill up very fast and I get hungry between meals.

Maybe it's just my choice of foods and maybe I'm trying to eat too fast. I know I'm supposed to eat slow, but sometimes "slow" doesn't fit my schedule and I forget.

If it is restriction, I'm going to be miserable after the fill. I think I better give this some more thought.

It sounds like you ARE restricted so you might want to wait a little while before you go in for another fill. When you eat crackers, you might want to first drink some Water to "lubricate" the esophagus and then eat them slowly.

Hi Vickie

First of all....what are you doing e-mailing at 12:20 in the morning???? Get some sleep!

I clicked on your link but it just took me to an earlier posting in this thread. Would you mind trying that again?

Thank You!

Glad your tooth is better!! That's a miserable feeling.

The link worked this time. That's very interesting. I'll try that next time.

I went for a fill yesterday and they increased me from 1.7 to 2.2. I knew I wasn't feeling much restriction. I think my "stuck" feeling is literally too much air.

I'll see how it goes.

I had issues for a while where I had air in my stomach and it would cause me to PB (which is the same as you throwing up the food in your throat, just not as much trouble as some others, lol), and then I'd burp, and actually be able to eat. Try to be very aware of swollowing air. I guess lots of people swollow more air when they drink with a straw, but I swollow less air when I drink with a straw. Also, maybe chew up some gas x's 30 minutes or so before your meal, that might help. Like I said, I went through a period of having trouble with this, but then it went away.

Hope this helps!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
