NYC1992 135 Posted May 5, 2013 My date of surgery is this Monday at 9:30 AM EST... which means I have around 1 day, 9 hours and 35 minutes until showtime! It really hasn't settled in yet that this is really happening because the experience is so new to me. I go through moments of feeling excited for the future but then get scared being 21 and never having surgery before. My fears are pretty irrational (waking up during surgery, not waking up, waking up alone in deep pain) but still there, though definitely not enough to discourage my decision. Any advice or helpful words would be very much appreciated - Mark 2 Sherry Stark Wilson and PrettyThick1 reacted to this

drehn88 251 Posted May 5, 2013 I'm having surgery tomorrow too. I'm excited now and the nerves haven't kicked in yet. I'm sure I won't be able to sleep tonight and I'll be a mess tomorrow. I noticed your ticker said you've been on here for more than 50 days. That means you've done your research and considered all other possibilities. That means you are ready for this. Good luck on your journey! 2 sp70 and It'sTime reacted to this
It'sTime 82 Posted May 5, 2013 Mark, Those are all normal feelings. The lapband surgery has been around for years now and is minimally invasive. You will be just fine! I've had five surgeries during my life and have had no complications with the anesthesia during any of them. You're doing the right thing---it will be done and over with before you know it! Hang in there! 1 PrettyThick1 reacted to this
sp70 193 Posted May 5, 2013 Your fears are perfectly normal. You will do just fine. My surgery is tomorrow as well, so today is a day of keeping busy getting things ready around the house so I can take it easy after that. You've worked hard to get to this point. You've got this! 2 PrettyThick1 and drehn88 reacted to this

Any advice or helpful words would be very much appreciated - Mark You'll do fine Mark. I was banded at the same hospital you are going to. I had Dr. Ren do my surgery....Dr. Fielding's wife. They are great at NYU...the post-op nurse never left my side and my pain and nausea were well controlled. I stayed overnight but that was because I have arthritis issues and needed help getting in/out of bed and walking around after surgery. At your age, you'll be back to normal before you know it. There's a small group of us in and around the city and we have a separate thread on this forum. If you are interested, I'll invite you. There are no men in our group as of yet, but we're all different ages so I'm sure you can find we can be good buddies for you as you start the journey. Good luck, 1 PrettyThick1 reacted to this
NYC1992 135 Posted May 6, 2013 Thank you all so much! It is 6 am right now... nervous they won't do it because I had gained extra weight from being postponed twice so I had that weight to lose plus I slipped up a tiny bit over the last 3 days My fear is that my liver hasn't shrunk enough. At this point, the idea of surgery I am unusually at peace with! 1 PrettyThick1 reacted to this

NYC1992 135 Posted May 7, 2013 Went in at 1:30 pm, was in recovery by 2:30. Am staying overnight (thankfully private room) as my oxygen levels kept dropping as low as in the 70 percentile and they're derinitely sure I have sleep apnea. Should be out by early morning!
