Reaction to whey protein

Recommended Posts

I started my pre-op diet 9 days ago and since then I have developed a rash that started on my upper thighs and arms. I first thought it was a heat rash but it is spreading. It is now on the tops of my feet. They ONLY thing I've changed in this time frame is that I am on the whey Protein Meal Replacement shakes for 2 weeks prior to my surgery. Upon googling this problem with the whey I did find that sometimes you can develope an allergy to it. Has anyone else had this problem and if I can't use this whey protein what can I use as my meal replacement? Of course it is the weekend and I can't go to my drs office until Monday.

Thanks, I will see what I can find but the nutritionist told us to be sure and use the whey Protein. I didn't know if it would mess up my diet if I changed or not.

Bariatric doctors definitely like whey. I'm not exactly sure why, because there are other very good sources out there.

Here are a couple of links to some other good products. Egg white Protein in VERY good, and many people do much better with it. Also - pea protein. I used to use the pea protein, prior to WLS. Now I use whey, but I will probably switch to egg white.

FYI - you can buy these in local vitamin/health food stores. Just call around your area:

Before I left the hospital they gave me Carnation Instant Breakfast high Protein Drink. There are 2 kinds, just make sure you get the higher Protein One. Good luck but calling the dietitian is the smartest since every doctor has their own 'rules'.

I haven't had a reaction like that hit I'm doing the whey too and it upsets my stomach a lot. Some of the whey has lactose, so if you're lactose intolerant that would be causing a reaction. If you use the whey isolate it doesn't contain lactose.

Even if you never had a reaction to lactose maybe now that you're having so much of it you're noticing the reaction.

I would call my doctor on the weekend. I never heard of a doctor not having someone on call.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
