Started my 2 week pre op diet yesterday

Recommended Posts

Well I started my 2 week Pre Op diet yesterday and between my wifes creative genius and keeping busy it has started out better than I can imagine. I am battling the habitual eating issues now even in the second day.

For you pro's out there was there anything that helped you get through this preop diet?

Congratulations, MJK!!!!

Keep excited!!! Talk yourself into each day, and set the goal as soon as you get out of bed! You are doing the two-week diet to make the surgery easier on your doc, which will in turn make healing easier for you!!! That, to me, would be the greatest incentive of all!!!

Think of the next eight weeks as preparation time, preparing for surgery, preparing for healing, preparing for the start of a new, healthy life!!!!

I didn't get put on the pre-op diet personally. I guess my doc doesn't practice it, but I wish I would have. That is two weeks you get to put toward the six weeks all "normal" people say it takes to make something a habit! That being said, I am almost 5 months out, closing in on 50 pounds off, and I still can't pass by the ice cream aisle at the store without at least taking Phish food out of the freezer to touch it lovingly:nono:!!!! Old habits die hard! But, they do die :rip: !!!!

Good luck - I'll be rooting you on!!!

I was banded exactly one week ago and I also did the pre-op diet. Two weeks before all I ate was chicken and yougurt. For the last week, all I had was yougut (I can't stand cottage cheese so I chose not to have it!).

It DOES help...the doc said the op was a breeze because of my liver....wasn't in the way at all. And supposedly, my recovery will be easier because of it.

I won't lie...the two weeks was HARD...but the first 4 days was the toughest...I went thru withdrawal (carb withdrawal I guess)...headaches, MOOD swings (as my husband will attest to!), anger, irritability etc...but I took it one hour (one minute if I had to) at a time and kept my eye on the big picture. I figured if I was doing something as drastic as this surgery, the least I could do is make it easier on the doc!

Good luck!

True So true, Thanks for your replies!

I am definately having Carb withdrawls and just regular food withdrawls. its almost like I miss the food passing over the mouth. My body yearns for it bad!

but so far I have been able to maintain, if it gets real bad I chew some gum and then when the flashes of hunger come maybe a fruit.

But so far I have passed two serious tests of Office cinnamon rolls and Kolaches... AHHHHHH! it burns us!

sorry talking about it still hurts a little.

I think I am going to call my Dr and make sure he wants me on veggie and shakes only for the first two weeks.

I will say that reeally opening up and talking about what I am realizing helps , it is alkmost scary to realize how much of an addiction Ihave to food.

In the name of Jesus I move on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
