The bariatric nurse that runs my support group says "we can tell when you've gone and eaten your last big meal before surgery". Then again, I didn't follow the pre-op diet and they still did my surgery.

My surgeon told me they can always tell by the size of your liver?? I don't think a piece of cheese will hurt anything, but it is important to be compliant so you can be successful. Best wishes!

It's all about the size of your liver. If they go in and it's still too big to safely do the surgery' date=' they'll sew you right back up without placing the band.[/quote']

I'm sure there's ways to check that before having surgery done.

My pre-op diet was 1200 calories/day; low fat. I wasn't perfect, and probably ate around 1400 calories/day. My surgery went fine. That is NOT to say that it's okay to go off the plan, because as mentioned above, if your liver is too large and fatty, they will not do the surgery.

I'm sure there's ways to check that before having surgery done.

If they did a CT scan then yes, but they don't do that for pre op. So, they won't know until they get into your stomach.

There have been a couple people on these forums who've gone into surgery and come out with all the scars but no band because their liver was too big to safely continue the surgery. Unfortunately it's a risk we all take going into surgery but sticking to your pre op diet greatly reduces the risks.

Missy is absolutely right. I know of a few who have gone in only to have been sewn back up and sent home on a pre-op diet even longer than the first go round.

My Dr. describes the liver as being like Jello, if it can't be moved out of the way, b/c its slipping and sliding, no surgery.

I'm sure a few taste of things here or there did not do any damage, but it wasn't worth the risk for me.

Watching the surgery on YouTube is quite interesting, seeing how the drs do this surgery with long instruments, looking at a tv screen. We certianly don't need to give them anymore challenges.

Good Luck with your surgery!

I was one of those patients with a fatty liver. My PCP told me years ago that my liver was enlarged. I followed the pre-op diet to the letter before surgery. My surgeon had a very hard time placing the band, but he kept at it and the surgery went as planned. That was scary to hear afterwards... all that time waiting to be approved, and then to find out that he almost wasn't able to do the procedure! The real fun was when the insurance company denied the extra charges for the extended time in the OR. They finally relented and paid.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
