I had a port replacement done on Friday 4/26/2013. Starting that evening I started having alot of pain. I know that I would be sore due to all the manipulation the Dr had to do. He replaced my port with a low profile port? It is smaller than my original port. I ended up having a hole in the port tubing. It is Sunday now and I am still having pain and discomfort. It feels like something is ripping when I bend over or move alot. Standing up and sitting down hurts and trying to sleep is miserable!!!!

My Dr. did not give me any pain medication and I did not even think to ask for it. The way they talked it was going to be very simple with some soreness.

Has anyone else had this experience? If so, what did your doctor say/do?

Both my port replacement surgeries hurt. It wasn't 'simple' at all. I was swollen for a week.

After my first one I went back to see my dr on the third day as I looked about 5 months pregnant with the swelling. He gave me pain meds and said it would subside in time. It did, but it took a lot of rest and not straining myself for it to eventually ease up.

I say call your dr and explain that you're in quite a lot of discomfort and need something for the pain.

  • I had a port replacement the same day as you did. Mr doc said just use extra-strength tylenol. I was expecting a Rx for pain. If you need it I would definitely call right now. everyone has different levels for pain. You should probably be resting. Do not pick up or carry anything! I has a 3 hour nap sat. and sun. I also took tylenol pm at night. Hope you feel better soon and put your feet up with a good book! sheila

I am going through the same. I was banded jan 2011 and had a port replacemn this past sat May 18th. My doctor wasnt giving me pain pills but i started crying in recovery. The pain when bending is excruchiating. I begged and got pain pills. They say this is such a simple surgery but it deff is not. I was told that the surgery ran an extra 30 mins bc I gained my weight back directly over the port and he really had to manipulate through fat and muscle just to find and remove the original port. I am extremly swollen. My first apt for a checkup in this Thursday. I am still very hungry but I know I will not get a fill bc I am to swollen for him to even reach the port withoit casueing me discomfort. I wish you the best of luck. Call your doctor and demand those meds. I'm right here with you....it's not painless.

Thank you all for your comments. I apologize on my delay in responding. I toughed it out and finally things got better. I was too embarrassed to call and ask for meds...afraid to look like a pill popper LOL I went in today for my first fill since port replacement. I am on Clear liquids for three days. I hope this works!!

Thanks again everyone!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
