2nd week post op, still in so much pain.

Recommended Posts

Hi! I just want to know I'm not alone. I've searched on lots of forums and I'm having trouble finding anyone going through the same things I am. I had my surgery on April 18th and I'm still in so much pain. The Dr. Told me everything is normal and I'm healing fine, but both sides of my stomach from under my breast to half way down my stomach is in constant pain. I thought I was going to die when I sneezed today it hurt so bad! I usually have a Med/high pain tolerance but I didn't think I would still be this bad off.... anyone else not feeling great just days after surgery?! Anything help?

I had mine on the 19th, and I've been almost completely recovered except for a little bit of local swelling around the port. I'd talk to your doctor or at least call your BASNC.

I was banded on the 11th. I had to stay overnight in the hospital because my stomach spasmed so bad I couldn't drink. My recovery has been very slow. I could barely eat my first week. I had 2 c-section that were a piece of cake but this surgery took a long time to recover from. I am 16 days out and still very sore. I can not lift anything and can only do very moderate exercise (like walking). I'm in relatively good shape and my BMI is 32. Some of us just take longer to heal than others.

Different people have different pain tolerance. For two weeks out, yours sounds a bit severe... definantly follow up with your doctor again... don't let them blow you off...

Did you have hietal hernia repair also? If so, the pain in that area will last a little longer, especially if you are large breasted and are wearing a bra. I had pain there for about three weeks. Stayed on the liquid pain meds at night for the first week and then toughed it out. I felt normal aout week four.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I will definitely call the Dr on Monday. I did feel blown off when I went in to visit him last week for another issue. I didn't have a hernia repaired. I suppose most of the (intolerable) pain at the moment is on the right side, once I move, sit, stand, sneeze or cough if feels like someone just stabbed me. I was able to go back to work Friday (mainly sitting all day) and I was exhausted and looking for the pain meds when I got home! :(

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
