Hernia and self pay question

Recommended Posts

So at my last trip to the surgeon he told me I had a hernia... I have horizon nj direct. I completed all my appointments and thought I was good to go but then the office told me they also wanted 2 years of weight history.. Which for me has become a challenge getting that, and also a few years ago I was put in methotrexate which is chemo therapy for my sever arthritis and lost some weight becuz it made me sick to my stomach, so 2 years ago I wasn't at a 37 bmi as I am now... My whole life I was heavy n now they want the only time I lost a few lbs becuz of chemo! So my question is if my insurance denys me becuz of those 2 years but they approve to have the hernia fixed how much around would I be stuck paying xtra for the band? Self pay? Any price range ideas?

I would doubt they would pay for your hernia repair only- most people that hve them don' t know they do and it isn't a problem unless it becomes strangulated.

Where i work (hospital) the band alone is 6k approx. Charges here for the whole surgery is upwards of 20k. Obviously every place could be different in their pricing schemes. :) This doesn't mean that is what insurances will pay.

My hernia repair was included in the fee for the band. Mine was $12k for surgery and 2 years of aftercare.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
