Banded April 24, 2013

Recommended Posts

I am finally banded. I have been working on this for about two years now, but last year, right before surgery date I became pregnant, something we both had wanted. I just had the baby in February, and scheduled my band as soon as OB and surgery doctor said it was ok. Hoping that it will work for me as good as it has for so many others. I did freak out when in the room, and wanted to leave, but I just prayed for a while and then everything was easier for me.

Wow, this is a little harder than expected. The pain is there, specially when I move, but my biggest problem is the pressure in the chest. That is hard. Hopefully it will go soon.

So, I am a female, 5.7 1/2 (according to doctors - according to me is 5.8). 241lb day of surgery, although originally it was 261lb. Problems with my breathing, back, knees and left foot, due to weight.

Thank you all. I am very excited, and cant wait to see results. I have only been able to drink very little these past couple days, but not worried, since I guess it will be better in the end. I find interesting how different diets are applied by doctors. Mine asks for 6oz total of Protein shake, and at least 32 oz of Water, but you can also do fat free broth and sugar free ice pops. I have seen some others with more oz of the shakes.

I am using the MyFitnessPal app on my phone to keep up on my food, exercise log.

Congratulations on your new baby...and your band! I'm sorry you're in a bit of pain right now, from what I understand it is to be expected but it will pass in the couple of days. You'll do very well, your little one will make sure you are getting your exercise in about a year when you're trying to keep up with him or her. :)

Thank yo Pretty! Yeah, she is going to keep me pretty busy. I have also a 6 year old boy, and he is already making plans for when mami is skinny, lol. I used to liked rollerskating, and he is already asking we buy new skates. This is very exciting for us.

I am glad to see other fellow April banders. Thank you, the baby is bringing so much joy in the house :) altough the pain sometimes makes it hard for me to take care of her. Good thing my mother lives with me, as my hubby works all day.

I noticed this pain on my middle left side of the abdomen. I dont think is the port, as the big scar is in the middle of my abdomen. On that side there is one of the little oppenings. It is really bugging me and the vicodin didnt help (was taking oxycodone, but told my doctor it was giving me this weird buzzing in my ears, so we switched to vicodin, which of course doesnt work). I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to see if I hurt something during my walk. I was standing a while at the park, and felt some bother. I know I did less than 1/2 hour walk, like the instructions say, but I did was standing for a while.

Aside from that, I have been doing well. Hungry quite a bit, but holding on there (family cooking, and friends posting food pics and tagging me doesnt help, lol. Neither does my friend, who calls me to translate her call to the chinese restaurant, lol). I have lost 7lbs in 4 days. My friend who got the sleeve told me to make sure I follow all instructiosn, since rhe first two weeks is when you lose more, which makes sense since it is liquids only.

I wish you all the best. This is a great step forward, and I am happy about it. May God bless your journey :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
