How to lower Cholesterol ?

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow bandsters I am four months banded and did my 3 month blood work to check my nutrition levels. So it turns out I have high Cholesterol and low Iron.< /p>

Can anyone help me out with some tips for low cholesterol foods or lowering my cholesterol. Also if you have this problem has your doctor put you on any meds? I don't understand how I have

this high cholesterol since I work out almost everyday and eat good. I guess not good enough. This is very frustrating news :(

Are you on a low carb diet? That can contribute to high cholesterol in some people.

If you are, see your nutritionist and tell them about your cholesterol issue so they can help you tweak your diet to better fit your needs.

Talk to your nutritionist for sure. It's not horribly common but some people have problems with high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure when on low carb diets. Your nutritionist can help you make the necessary changes to help bring the cholesterol back down.

And sometimes, it is genetic. Your body does not have the off switch when it comes to dumping cholesterol into your system so it functions properly. If your diet is clean, you exercise, meds may be the only other option.

I have a feeling that your levels will improve with weight loss and exercise. You could always try Fish Oil, which is over-the-counter and comes in a mini capsule now. Are you taking an Iron supplement?

I'm on a low carb diet, have lost 92lbs and still had to be put on lipitor. Your doctor doing the blood check can look at your levels (Trig/LDL/HDL) to figure out you have the genetic issue or if it's food and determine if you need the meds. It runs in the family and since my Trigs were at a good number, she knew I was a genetic case and put me on meds. It sucks, I thought I would beat it, but can't help it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
