If you had a hernia, did you find out before or after your surgery was done? What are the symptoms? Did the hernia surgery cause you to stay in the hospital for a longer period?

My hernia was diagnosed a year before my band surgery, I was seeing an ENT doctor for a constant sore throat and he sent me for a barium x-ray, I never did have the typical burning you get with reflux though...My surgeon fixed the hernia during my banding and I got to go home 5 hours after surgery :)

I just found out I have a hiatal hernia when I got the upper gi done, the dr said it was small so she isnt worried about it...she said when she places the band it will pull down on the hernia causing it to fall into the right place

I did not have any symptoms at all

The only possible symptoms were probably when I was prego n had lots of heartburn n etc...

I knew about the hernia and my stomach was in the wrong place. They were fixed with the band. I took 6 pills a day to eat because of those problems. I was treated for asthma and then COPD until my lung doctor did a camera down the throat. I coughed 24/7 before they were fixed. I am thrilled no more meds for these and with the band I am getting healthy!!

I had a hernia for years prior to surgery - used to use lots of antacid etc. it was repaired during placement of the band My doctor had told me years ago that the more over weight you are they more problems with the hernia you may have. Anyway repaired during surgery and home within hours

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
