stept04 465 Posted April 20, 2013 Does anybody know why exactly they do the upper GI? Does it have to do with fitting the band or something? Just curious because they have not done an upper GI on me. They did an ultrasound on my stomach area, but that's been it. I'm scheduled in May. Did everybody have an upper GI?
stephanie0456 38 Posted April 20, 2013 I had an upper ugi done with the barium swollow.... It was TERRIBLE! Lol the stuff they make u drink.... It's terrible... Luka Beth 78 Posted April 20, 2013 My surgeon did not do an upper gi for band surgery-he reserves this for RNY and VGS. The upper GI is when toy are put under anesthesia and the camera tube its put down you're throat. He did have me do an EGD, which is basically the fluoroscopy where you swallow barium and stand on front of the screen. The test is done to ensure that you don't have any current existing ulcers or issues. The only reason he made me do one was because i had some acid reflux in the year prior to beginning the process. Good luck.
stephanie0456 38 Posted April 20, 2013 Ya I had to do that swollow study too, it wasnt pleasant! From what I've heard the surgeon also does one after the surgery also
frilights 4 Posted April 20, 2013 I had to do the same. I asked why they did this and they told me so there are no surprises when the Dr. performs surgery (ulcers, tumors, etc).

Toddy 758 Posted April 21, 2013 I didn't have one pre-band, but did have one post band. And then I've had several others since I had band problems. The ONLY one that was truly awful was one where they didn't mix the liquid up very well and it was like drinking liquid cement that was chunky!!!!! I'm experienced enough now to know that it doesn't have to be awful like that and will speak up if it ever happens again!
stephanie0456 38 Posted April 21, 2013 Yes it was very awful! They made me drink one that was very thick I mean like u said cement think and them another one that was very liquidy...I was fine the whole time but when I got off that table when they were done I got very sick... Just thinking about it now is making my mouth salivate! Yuck... But I can't imagine having to do one after surgery, I know that's Gona make me sick and I don't think that would be good right after surgery!
