Anyone cheated on the pre-op diet, but did great with the band?

Recommended Posts

Again this subject comes up. Yes you are only cheating yourself, I for one di cheat almost everyday, I was a little heavier than you but it didn't make a difference to my surgery, I went thru it with flying colors Your diet after your surgery is different, you will be able to eat mushies by week two, your band, if not filled, will only limit what you can eat. Once you get your band filled you wont be able to eat anything but what is on your list or you will vomit it up. You did a great thing, you limited your calories for that day, if you are going to cheat, do not eat ANY fat, it is to shrink your liver, if you don't have a fatty liver most docs wont make you go on a diet, I did so I avoided FAT like the plague. You can do this, we cannot change how we eat overnight or why we eat overnight, don't be so hard on yourself. If you were heavier I would tell you to not cheat. I didn't tell my doc that I cheated and they all know that we do, someone on here said that 90% do cheat, I believe that or we wouldn't need this weight loss surgery. I am an opponent of building up and not tearing down. Hang in there, you will find your way! Good luck on your surgery.

Thank you Lori. I just don't want to set myself up for failure, but like you said, it takes time to change bad habits. As they say, "Rome wasn't built in one night." I also belive the statistics that 90% cheat. How do they expect a food addict to go from eating McDonalds one day, to just drinking Protein shakes as a meal. It is really tough, and takes a lot of discipline. Like B-52 said, you wouldn't need the lap band if you could do it on your own. I was really hard on myself at first, but I understand that I have a problem, and this is what I am doing to get help. It's a process, and I have to be honest with myself, and work hard to change, and get the results I want in the end. Thank you for all the support. This has really helped encourage me, and restore my hope. :)

My doctor has me on the liquid diet, and it has been up and down for me. I had a small Caesar salad yesterday, and today a half of cup of Campbell's Gumbo Soup. I also had a few of my daughters animal crackers. That was pretty much the extent of my whole meal for the day. Should I be worried about how well I will be able to do after my banding? Thanks for the help!

i think the majority of us are stronger than we know

we have failed so many (diets) in the past so why wouldnt we (fail) this also

my dr told me this pre op was to shrink my liver.....he told me how he did a surgery on a lady who did not follow his instructions and he couldnt operate...i could not fathom that happening to me.....and hence i did not (cheat)...i was too scared too..doesnt mean i didnt want to i figured id come this far and i told myself if i was able to get the surgery, id do whatever i had to to make it work.....just know you can do it..i believe that....you gotta walk through the darkness before you stand in the light..

They never really went into detail on the purpose of the diet. I thought it was just to help start the weight loss process' date=' and to get me prepared to a new way of eating. My pre-op visit is tomorrow, I've actually been doing pretty well besides today and the salad yesterday, and I've been working out everyday. My surgery is not scheduled until Tuesday. So, I still have time to get back on the horse and finish strong. Wish me luck, and thank for the replies.[/quote']

I was told that the reason for the pre-op diet was to ensure that your liver was not too large to get around with the surgery. If the liver is too large, the surgeon may have to do a larger incision instead of doing the surgery laproscopically.

VERY true! The other choice is to stay big and eventually die because of it.

Hi Creekwood,

I just finished my last pre-op shake before my surgery tomorrow. My appt, is at 9:15am. I can say the two weeks went by quicker than I expected. Good luck on your pre-op, I hope you have better success than I did. :)

I never cheated on my pre-op diet because i was told that if my liver doesn't shrink and they go in laparoscopic and can't work. They will then have to classical cut me open. And i didn't want to be opened. So i followed my diet to a t.

I know it's hard, but you have to stick to the plan. I have a friend that cheated on the pre-op and post-op diets and it caused a lot of discomfort for her, she's fine now though. You don't want to cause a delay in your surgery - which is likely to happen if you haven't gotten the 5-10lbs off you need to de-fat your liver. If you need to chew, go to Sonic (or anywhere with small crunchy ice chips) and chew on those.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
