Hey everyone!

Had my surgery in August and have been losing a nice amount of weight and have had ZERO issues with my band (yay!) (knock on wood!)

However, for the past month I have been suffering from heartburn. It's not consistent so I manage it, but its definitely a real pain.

I don't have reflux, and I don't think i'm too tight

It was really bad last night when I was laying flat....

Anyone have any advise?

Anyone have any recommendations for good/band friendly heartburn meds?

Thanks

I know you don't think you're too tight, but heartburn and/or reflux are a red flag when you have the band. They can be a sign of being too tight or even a slip. Plus, left untreated it can lead to erosion.

Give your doctor a call, it's always better safe than sorry, you know?

Nooo don't get nervous! It's probably nothing. But, it's always better safe than sorry and (God forbid) something isn't right the sooner it's caught the easier it's fixed.

Thanks!

I just emailed my doc

Hey,

I was banded last august as well!

My doctor has prescribed Prevacid Solutabs ever since I have had surgery. These dissolve on your tongue or can be dissolved in a couple of tea spoons of Water and taken that way.

I am noticing now that I may need to increase the dose or change to a different med but it had worked well for the most part for at least the first 6 months.

I only get hearburn or reflux when I am too tight but that is just me. Have you been eating anything different lately?

My doc just emailed me back that he wants to see me asap (even today)

:o :o

Now i'm really nervous!

1) How can I suddenly be tight?

2) ESPECIALLY if i don't feel otherwise sick, and can keep my foods down ok?

I don't wake up at night with acid or slime in my throat, just a low grade faint heartburn.

Hely88, are these your symptoms?

Do you have any other symptoms that accompany you when you're too tight? or just the heartburn

Ok....breath. You're going to be fine.

Do you have allergies? Under a lot of stress? Been sick? A lot of things can make your band tighten up and it's easily fixed by a small unfill.

I really, truly think you'll be fine but it's a good thing your doc is going to see you.

Ran to doc and he basically put the needle into my port, then I sat up and chugged a glass of Water. 3-4 droplets of saline spritzed into the syringe and he said that the water going through my esaphagous forced some saline out of the band.

So I hope it's all better now (hard to believe that so little could make a difference...)

When I left I still had some lingering heartburn, but he said it's not something that's worrying him- it's probably just irritation.

BTW, have you ever heard of getting an unfill the way I got mine? (with the saline spritzing out into the syringe as i drink?)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
