Bandedlexi 11 Posted April 18, 2013 Hi guys, I was banded on the 2nd of April 2013 and have not yet had a fill. So far so good! I've been hearing the term 'PB-Ing' and don't quite understand why how or when this would occur?? Would love an explanation !! Thanks guys !
Banded Dan 9 Posted April 18, 2013 Its when you get stuck and you burp up the food that is obstructing your band. Its usually accompanied by saliva/flegm that we call slime! 1 catfish87 reacted to this
Bandedlexi 11 Posted April 18, 2013 So I'm guessing that's usually after your first fill??? Thank you for the insight !
donna12 742 Posted April 18, 2013 bandedlexi, oh my, keep reading on this sight you will learn and learn my dear friend. Dan is right and I've had my share of many stuck episodes and many PB'ing episodes, one being Sunday, it was one of the worst in a while. For me its still learning my band, yes I'm 10 months post op and still learning how to eat, you must take tee tiny bites and I mean the size of your pinky nail, no joke and chew till its liquid or you will get stuck, yes of course after you get fills but taking too big of bites and not chewing now could end in this result without fills too. But for me this past Sunday I happen to be eating pulled pork BBQ, not the healiest choice but was craving it so I got some on Saturday and warmed it up on Sunday, anyway, didn't take my tiny bite and swallowed and BAM, you better be near a bathroom too, for me I start to salivate excessively and then the nasty slime starts and you spit it out, sorry its gross but happens then you PB (productive burp) up the some of the food. For me however after doing this I was still stuck till finally I threw up forcefully which is NOT good for the band, it can cause a slipped band if you throw up a lot. But for Sunday I lost my lunch to say the least or not so least at this point in my story to you. Whatever you do on your journey is don't hesitate to ask questions on here no matter how dumb or how small you may think they are. I'm sure some of us have been there. balbuquerque 85 Posted April 18, 2013 This sound all so scary
kll724 3,055 Posted April 18, 2013 PB=productive burp. It doesn't necessarily have to come after your 1st fill. My 1st experience was before a fill. It is worst because you can't always stop it. Bet wishes to you and fingers x'd that you don't get your 1st pb soon. Karen 1 donna12 reacted to this
wildrose1966 396 Posted April 18, 2013 I was banded in Sept and have had 4 fills and just had my first stuck on Sunday, second one on Tuesday. Not pretty and not fun. For me I can totally feel it and then I get a sick feeling in my stomach like I will vomit. Lots of spitting up slime and I don't recall burping but Sunday it came up - with the slime, not a heaving vomit (sorry for the description) and Monday it went down. Not sure what has changed with my band as I am crawling and fairly discouraged with the progress or lack of in the last 7 months. Pure disappontment is the truth, I am exercising, following my eating guidelines, but am hungry and frustrated. Another fill tomorrow and I am sure I am close. Now have to watch the chicken and bread products a bit more diligently. 1 donna12 reacted to this
balbuquerque 85 Posted April 18, 2013 Wildrose why do you think is different now since you never had an episode? I don't have a fill yet and I am scared of getting one. God knows I want to loose weight but not like that. I'm so questioning whether I did the right thing or not. Specially considering my discomfort and inability to move in certain ways that I had no problem before the band. I am a housekeeping manager and yesterday while inspecting a room I tried reaching under a bed to pull a piece of dubree and was completely unable to do so. That is so discouraging. I can't sleep on my stomach as I've done all my life. 1 JACKIEO85 reacted to this

I can't sleep on my stomach as I've done all my life. I knew that the chicken was dry the first night I cooked it, added a bit of BBQ Sauce and it was okay. Leftovers the next day same thing....chicken was too dry. The thin crust pizza, might have been a case of not paying attention to small bites and chewing, since it was in the lunch room with other staff and we were chatting away. I don't know what has changed but I do know that I need to be focused and aware whenever I am chewing, so socializing and eating I need to be extra careful. The chicken, I should have thrown it out the first night, but I didn't. Both episodes were totally my fault. I did not vomit..........sliming is just that, saliva that is thick and slimey and you produce lost of it, need to spit it out. I am not sure when you got banded, but unless I am eating I have nothing that reminds me I have the band (except for the burping and farting but that is a whole other story), I can do anything, move in any direction and although am not a stomach sleeper, slept on my side the very first night after surgery. Hang in there and it will get better.......... 3 donna12, 2muchfun and catfish87 reacted to this
JACKIEO85 308 Posted April 18, 2013 My understanding of the symptoms........... hard stop = vomiting or PB soft stop = your own body's signals that you need to stop eating (burping, hiccupping, yawning, etc.) PB = productive burping sliming = saliva that is vomited up when you have a blockage; the mouth has a natural ability to overproduce saliva when a blockage occurs, trying to naturally unstop the food stuck in the band 2 donna12 and Lapbandster reacted to this
wildrose1966 396 Posted April 18, 2013 My sliming was not vomited up, it just happens, fills your mouth and you have to spit it out..........not fun.

I can't sleep on my stomach as I've done all my life. Don't be scared and please don't question whether you did the right thing, it is blissful on the other side. All I was trying to explain was a stuck episode in detail, yes its gross, not fun and what PB'ing is all about. I think I have 4.5cc's in my band, not sure and as of right now I cannot eat bread, rice, or Pasta. I also cannot tolerate dry meats like over cooked chicken or it warmed up till its dry or it won't go down. You just need to be mindful of your bite size and your chewing till liquid form. I've had my share of stuck episodes, my fault, bite size or not chewing because we are all used to shoving it in and chomping down food. I would do this all over again, best decision I've ever made. Not sure how long you've been banded, forgot to look at your profile, sorry but your pain will get better in time. I was slow at recovering, moreso than others on here. I honestly don't know how someone can have it and go back to work in a week, I was still recuping 3 weeks out. Luckily I don't work. It will get better for you, just hang in there. Best wishes. balbuquerque 85 Posted April 18, 2013 Thank you Donna for the encouraging words, it's good to hear. I'm 28 days post op, and just going through a rough phase I hope. I'm lucky in the sense that I've never liked dry foods so that will be easy. Stews have always been my preference so just cut small, eat slow and chew mindfully. I hope the discomfort goes away soon Thanks again. 1 donna12 reacted to this

Lexi,One thing that is pretty consistent with all the responses above you'll notice is that the one's who've experienced it, HAVE LEARNED FROM IT. "too dry, totally my fault, etc." Notice how they all seem to mention that. Was true for me too. I learned the hard way too. I was so hardheaded...didn't chew well, ate too fast. Now, never an issue anymore. Don't fret it...we all learn. 2 KAATNS and donna12 reacted to this
