My Journey Starting With Pre Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Today is a lot better than yesterday I did a low impact workout for 3 minutes today. I'm taking it easy though because I have this fear that my incisions will rip each time I move. I am slowly getting better at it.

I feel the same way, better today vs yesterday. I have the same fear about my incisions ripping open. It's so nice to be able to have someone to relate to that had their surgery on the same date.

.. My liquid diet getting better. I work in a deli next to the bakery first day the cakes were calling me. Today fried chicken was calling . But I haven't cheated . Surprising that the chicken broth tastes good I have lost 4 pounds in 2 days. Thanks. And I hope everything goes well with you. Believe me your posts helps a lot.

I'm glad to hear that your liquid diet is going good. 4 pounds in two days is awesome. Your so strong being able to work next to a bakery on a liquid diet, especially the first few days. Keep up the good work. Thanks for your support I'm doing better today. I'm so glad my post can be useful to you. You gotta let me know how your surgery goes. I wish you all the best on your journey :)

Yesterday I got released from the hospital around 2pm. When I got home it was really hard for me to take a shower and use the restroom, because of the pain from my incisions which felt like they were going to rip open. The hot shower did feel good. When I stand up one of my incisions caves in and looks disfigured. I hope when it heals it looks better. I think most of my pain is from my hernia repair. I had to have my husband help get me dressed and to get up and sit down. I was kinda missing the hospital where I could push a button for my meds. I have been using a heating pad for my back and abdomen which seems to be helping. I tried to sleep as much as I can and every time I had to get up to use the restroom I would walk around before sitting back down. Thank goodness for my reclining couches which has a button to bring up the recliner electronically , it makes it so much easier to get up and is so comfortable. That's going to be my bed for the next few days. I was able to get in a 4oz Protein Shake and 1 1/2 bottles of Water. Today I was feeling much better and was able to get up on my own and do things on my own. It still felt like my incisions were ripping open, but I pushed through it. I managed to get more walking in today. I also was able to take in more liquids today, but my calories are still low around 240. I feel really itchy today and I think that is just from the meds and gas the doc pumps you up with. I'm going to try to get some Benadryl tomorrow for the itching. I have a lot of pressure in my upper abdominal area and chest which is making it hard to breath especially when I get up, and I think that is from the hernia repair. My sugar levels are completely normal now. Can't wait to be healed, just taking it one day at a time.

Sounds like you are going fine! Cabin fever has hit me. I am determined to do a little shopping today. But I am trying to build up my strength this morning I had 4 oz of Protein shake then I am going to add more broth in today so I won't get fatigue. The good news is the incisions pain is not bad and my shoulder pain is gone for now. I still have chest pain. Hopefully by me going shopping today will release this gas pressure.

I am doing much better. Although I still have incision pain when I stand up. I have this really big incision across my abdomen about 3 inches and its the one that bothers me the most and feels like its ripping open. I want to leave the house to, but I don't think I'm ready, because I still have problems catching my breath. I hope you got out and your shopping trip went good. Your doing an awesome job!!!

Today was a better day. Just one day at a time right. Two of my incisions bother me still, but mostly the one that's 3 inches long. It still feels like its going to rip open when I stand up. Taking showers seem to help with softening up the incisions which helps the pain. I finally got on my bed today with the help of a step ladder, pillows, and my husband...lol... It turned out to be not so comfortable so I went back downstairs to the recliner. My husband also brought me down a rocking chair with the rocking ottoman from my sons room. It was nice to finally sit up instead of just laying in the recliner. I did good today with getting more Water in and more calories. I got about 8 cups of water and 490 calories. I'm still taking meds, but only after I am up a lot doing things and it starts to hurt. The meds help me relax and be able to sleep. Rest has definitely helped with healing. Not to be gross, but I finally had a bowel movement and it made my abdomen feel even better. I'm hoping by Monday I can actually get outside and take a walk. My weight is still the same from the day of surgery, but I'm guessing its just from not getting enough calories and the swelling from the gas and surgery. Can't wait to see the scale drop again.

Today I was feeling 99% better. I got my 8 cups of Water in and can get around a lot easier without being winded. I tried this nectar shake mix that the dietician gave to me as a sample, I added milk with it and it was the best thing I have had since being on a liquid diet. It tasted just like Cookies and cream ice cream. I'm so going to go buy a big container of that. I also have this other shake from GNC and its pumpkin, I love pumpkin. I got about 400 calories in today. Wasn't planning on taking anymore meds until out of the blue I had this itch in my throat, I kept trying to drink water to make it go away so I didn't have to cough, but it was unavoidable. I screamed for someone to help me since I was laid back in the recliner. My husband came rushing to help sit me up, but by then I was already coughing and I couldn't find anything to put pressure on my abdomen except my hands. That was the worst freaking pain since surgery. I took the pain meds after and put the heating pad on. I feel better now, but I never want to cough again.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
