Newly banded - struggling with liquids

Recommended Posts

Hello, I was banded on April 12 and am still on liquids (although thicker now) until Friday. I'm having a hard time stomaching them, I don't know if its me feeling full or just getting disgusted with the choices I have (soup Soup and more soup or yogurt) that I have no interest in them at all. I'm also having a hard time not drinking cold liquid and my surgeon wasn't too detailed about how long that had to go on for. Before surgery I was constantly drinking something, mostly Water or tea, cold and through a straw. Now I can't do either of those and so I hardly drink anything at all which I know isn't a great idea. Just wanting to vent and see if anyone else has had this issue. I know this will pass...I keep telling myself that everyday! :)

Hey! I was banded on the 2nd of April, and I have just pass this phase. Let me tell you, it passes! I could hardly drink anything in the first two weeks, as well as thicker liquids were really heavy initially and made me feel sick! It's just the swelling around the band. Eventually, liquids like Water will go down much easier and eating mushies will be the best thing you ever experienced! As far as not wanting food, I found it was fear that stopped me. I only ate because I had too because I didn't know how I would feel after:) good luck and the next week you should feel some relief :)

Xx Lexi

you are so very newly out of surgery and your insides are swollen, bless your heart..its hard to get anything down...i recall that was the issue with me..(have no fear as the swelling subsides, it will get easier)..you need to sip and sip some more and then sip more,,staying hydrated is key.....SF popsicles saved me...and little sips of Protein is important as that will feed/fuel your body until reg foods are started again....its hard yes, but its worth it...hang in there okay

I was banned on April 11th and have been feeling the same way - not wanting to drink anything... Glad to know that it will subside and the name of the game is to sip.

I've really enjoyed reading all your replies, thank you so much for reminding me this will not last. I feel much better today then I have since surgery so I'm going to try and drink a little more today. Looking forward to Friday and trying the mushy foods, but hopefully like Bandedlexi said I won't let the fear get to me. I know in time it will be like second nature, I just need to get used to it. And carolinagirl, SF popsicles are the best right now, thanks! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
