I personally do not use unflavored, but I know a lot of people use either Unjury or Isopure. Inexpensive is a relative term... these are not cheap, but high quality with a good cost/serving ratio.

When I used Protein Powder ( for a few mths post banding 3 1/2 yrs ago), I sampled many from GNC. Didn't like any of them. The unflavored truly weren't. I found Syntrax Nectar pretty untasty (added it to puddings, Soups, mashed potatoes, etc) and reasonable in price. Here's a link to Amazon (I think it's the cheapest around)

http://www.amazon.com/Syntrax-Nectar-Medical-Unflavored-1-Pound/dp/B001I1NSUY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366053471&sr=8-2&keywords=unflavored+protein+powder

Good luck! Protein that you actually like is hard to find. I never did find a Protein Shake that I liked. I held my nose and gulped them until the 4 weeks was over and never had another.

Unjury unflavored protien kind of reminds me of carnation coffee creamer powder without the taste. I use it to make Jello and puddings without issue. And once its in whatever you put it in you cant taste it. Just be careful when using with hot liquids because it can clump at temps over 140F. When making jello you would whisk it into the cold Water and then temper in the hot water with the gelatine dissolved in it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
