I was told to discontinue drinking coffee, because they've found that the acid can erode the band. That, in addition to the small ulcers coffee can cause in the pouch.

I'm curious to know how others are dealing with this. Or, if they were even instructed against coffee. I've been SO out of sorts without that little bit in the morning, and tea just doesn't cut it. A couple of days ago I allowed myself a 1/2 cup of coffee (about 4 oz), and it made ALL the difference in the way I feel. Would love some feedback on this.

I was not told to discontinue caffeine; in fact coffee was served to me in the hospital post-op.

What I have found, however, is a big POW from the caffeine in my morning coffee. I suspect it is due to how little food I have in there in the morning. Really, my one cup was giving me the shakes. So I switched to a decaf...and, no shakes!

Bovine Feces. Ask them to show you the study where this is documented, the acid produced by your stomach many, many times more destructive than the acid in coffee. I am sucking down my second 16 ounce cup this morning, and believe me, my coffee makes Truck Drivers cringe in terror. My Surgeon belongs to a religion that forbids the use of coffee, yet when I asked him about it, his only concern was the calories from additives. When I told him I drank it black, he told me I could drink as much as I want. As far as caffeine being a diuretic, it loses that effect at a normal baseline of use, which means that if you normally drink 16 ounces a day, it will lose it's diuretic effect, much the same as it loses it's effect as a stimulus.

LOL! I'm scared of the coffee you drink! I've become quite the wimp in my older age. All I can tolerate now, is a very small cup of 1/2 caf 1/2 Decaf. But it's religion!! Makes a huge difference in how I feel.

I was told coffee is fine. I have a big cup every morning, with some sugar free flavored Creamer (and I track those calories, of course). I think I'd die without my coffee...and I'd feel sorry for those around me if I couldn't have it! haha

I too can no longer drink full caffeinated coffee. I'm now doing a little bit of 1/2 caf 1/2 Decaf, but find the decaf ratio is increasing over the caffeinated.

I found a coffee online that is reduced acid. It's marketed toward people with reflux and ulcers. I do find that I have a problem with the acid, but that started even before surgery. I ordered a couple of samples, before committing to a whole pound. I'll see how that goes, but I really don't want (can't) give it up completely.

Just got done drinking a pot. IF, IF.....the"acid from the coffee" EVER were even touch my band, I'd have bigger problems than coffee. You didn't mention.....who told u this? Your doctor?

not sure how liquid going (down your throat) affects the band on the outside of your stomach as this doesnt make much sense. but each doctor/person different. my dr said nothing about coffee (except no caffeine before surgery) and then after, it was fine. if in doubt ask your dr.

In the aftercare classes, the subject of coffee usually comes up. They don't recommend it. It's not just the band, but it's the ulcers it can cause in the pouch. I understand the concern about ulcers from acid, but the band erosion doesn't make sense to me, either. There's no sense in me asking again, because I'll get the same answer. They don't support it, apparently from issues they've seen. But I also have to wonder if this is more of an issue for people who mainline it all day long. That would NOT be me.

I'm trying to follow their rules as best as I can. But this ONE isn't going to stick.

I was told to only have decaff coffee and wanted me to start it before my pre-op diet. I went 1/2 caff 1/2 decaff. Now I'm on full decaff and, at first, it killed me. I was tired all the time, but I've gotten used to it.

Oh yeah! I'll bet my coffee can kick your coffee's butt! :D

I'm right there with ya. Screw that "words of wisdom" crap. Gimmee my caffeine and make it dark roast and bold.

Decaf actually has a little bit of caffeine, but it's a fraction of what's in regular. As sensitive as I've become to caffeine, my guess is that I'll be on 100% decaf in the next couple of years.

I have up to 3 cups Decaf a day. It really soothes my sweet tooth and sometimes for a short time my hunger. I cant imagine not having it.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
