Welp I have been banded for almost two weeks, and have been doing well with my food intake. Luckily my MD is "aggressive" [his words] with getting me back to solid food, which has been going well! BUT I am so emotional!!! The last few days I have just been down in the dumps, and emotional about the change. Craving foods that I shouldn't eat, which I haven't gave in to. Is this normal? Food has always been my friend, my confidant, and go to when I am emotional, and now I am trying to break up with it..... at least this is how I feel. Like our relationship is breaking up.... I know kind of sick huh? I want this so bad, and I will succeed! I may fall sometimes, or trip up but I really do want this to work and am willing to give it my all!

Mourning is part of the process. I'm sure you will have MANY people respond, telling you that they went through the same thing. It's a huge change. I'm 18 days out, and have had some weepy moments as well. Yesterday I was ready to chuck the whole thing; I was so depressed. I THINK that I should feel elated; I'm dropping weight, the surgery is over, I'm on a path to a healthier life, etc. But I've been very low energy, and just blah! I think also, surgery and all that goes with it, takes a toll on our bodies. You're less than two weeks out, and I think the assault to your body is part of it. But the mourning for the loss of your best friend, food, is very real. Those feelings will probably come and go, but it will get better. Especially when you start dropping sizes! Hang in there.....you are not alone.

I'm so jealous of both of you. I'm still pre-op. dreading how long they will make me wait til I get approved and can actually get my surgery. I wish you both the best but NEVER GIVE UP!!! You CAN do this and you WILL do this!!!

This is a normal reaction to the surgery. Hang in there, and keep the faith.

Yup, perfectly normal. It will pass, but will be back and back and back and back. I'm a little over three months and normally don't have a problem, but last night it was all I could do not to stuff everything I could find down my throat. I gave in (a little) counted the calories and moved on.

Besides, if you think you are emotional now, wait until you see the scale go up instead of down because you ate garbage.

I also am almost 2 weeks out. I have has some of the same feelings, so you are not alone. I also am very weepy. I had a total knee replacement just 5 weeks before my band surgery. I appreciate your sharing. It helped me. Hang in there. We're all in this together.

KY, keep up with your PT on the knee replacement. I have had both done and PT is the key, work through the pain. They really gave me back my life.

I think one of the keys to wls is to have your "head" in the right place. I think that is a large part of the reason that insurance requires the "psych" visit. If you have an emotional attachment to food, you might want to talk to a professional. I actually started reasearching wls for my daughter, but realized the need to have your head in the right place, which she didn't have at the time... but I did. I LOVE not being able to eat much. I go out to dinner, and take home enough left overs for another couple of meals.

I think that all the preparing; therapy, classes, etc. gives us the tools for the hard times. But I do not believe that most of us lost the emotional attachment to food prior to surgery. And knowing something logically in your head, is OH SO DIFFERENT than living it. All the preparedness doesn't fix our relationship with food. It's getting through each day, finding ways to get through the times when we just want to shove it in with both hands. Some days are smooth sailing, and others are a very bumpy ride. I don't know that I will ever resolve my emotional attachment to food. But what I CAN do, is find alternatives to deal with it. I may not win every single time, but it's what happens most of the time that matters.

Very normal. It comes and goes. I love food and I mourn it often. Sad but true.

Actually talked about this with my primary care doctor today and he also explained that not only is this a time of great change in our relationship with food but that also the body is adjusting to the new model of life and that is done through our hormones. So yes the weepy time is quite normal. I am just a little over 3 weeks out from my banding and have had those moody days also. Down 24 lbs and am so thrilled with the energy level I am now having. I actually look forward to exercising and go start sweating instead of weeping. Good luck, stay strong and know that there are plenty of supporters out here for you.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
